65 Dart Wagon Conversion to a Sedan Delivery

-
I had to send the crank out to get the converter pocket opened to accept the A500 converter. Got the call today (finally) that it’s ready Including hot tanked (i guess that’s what cleaning means)...
not sure if your kidding, so i'll say it anyway :), you should still scrub out the oil holes with brushes.

When I pick it up, I’ll definitely find out what “cleaning” entails. If it means hot tanking or similar and that’s it, I’ll definitely take the time to clean the oil holes. Thanks for the reminder!

My bodyman friend came by to see if he could get anything done. He finished with the passenger fender, got It blocked, primed and in paint.

my afternoon was spent on the engine compartment wiring. I found i needed to have some of the components installed so i could verify the length of the harness before wrapping it. Reason is I’ll be using a modified 65 Dart harness engine harness and will add a fuse and relay center

Which will house headlight relays and maxi fuses to protect various aspects of the electrical system.

In my parts storage I found 4 starter relays

3 horn relays

A couple of electronic regulators that look like 69-earlier regulators

and a brand new washer pump. No, it’s not the high priced Chrysler version but the identical cheaper 65/66 Mustang version

I selected a starter and horn relay and installed them along with a voltage regulator and washer pump with the proper cad plated hardware.

Because it’s so easy to install the front brake line now rather than later with the engine installed, it was a no brainer to do it now. While I was on a roll, I installed the firewall to engine ground strap, the brand new water control valve and the AC drier bracket that was powder coated by our own Leanna @CudaChick1968. I added the rebuilt drier that Classic Air rebuilt a couple of years ago and will do the final adjustment when I install all the AC lines.

Spent awhile this afternoon working on the hood. Had to get the 409 or Greased Lightning or whatever wifey keeps around for cleaning. Needed it to clean all the dirt and grime off prior to running the DA on it. Wife came up while I using the DA so didn’t think anything of it. Come to find out she took a couple of pics while I was working just to prove I do work once in awhile lol. Here we are in living color in my slime lime Mopar Muscle Tee shirt.

I guess a clarification is needed - the main body is getting painted today - all the bolt-ons - doors, hood and fenders - have been painted ready to begin the assembly.

The body is now white! As my friend Ulf says, now the fun stuff begins (in a few days!).

The wife says there’s too much body white and maybe something needs to be done to break it up. Throwing it out to those following (and even casual observers), how would you break it up on the sides?

You could do some nice pin striping on the body lines. Or some kind of writing on the paneling????

Thanks - Was thinking of the pin striping AND writing on the side - maybe Mopar Parts Since 1965 with a telephone number as it was in 65 (MP5-5555) or something similar.

I like the pin stripe idea. I also like the look of a darker roof panel.

Looks great! Maybe some type of blue stripe that follows the upper body line, and then in a fancy script on the metal panels where the quarter windows used to be..."Don's Delivery Service"
 :steering:

I was showing my wife how they put racing stripes on the 65 Dart GT/Barracuda and she said she likes that idea even though it wouldn’t break up the white on the sides. Pinstripes along the sides would certainly help. When our 93 Dakota was her DD, she wanted the skunk stripes on it!

Not my car, but EVERYONE paints some type of business on their panel truck/car.

i like that idea. A local lettering company does that all the time on commercial vehicles. It’s probably done with a decal; will have to check on it.

Jackie - I was talking to my friend who painted the body and he liked the idea of some kind of logo or something where the rear quarter windows used to be. I told him if I decided on pin striping I wanted it painted rather than using one of those pinstripe kits from the parts store. Gonna have to wait till she’s all assembled for sure.

Good idea on waiting. That way you can see the total look of the completed car before jumping too soon and regretting it. Stuff like wheels and trim can make a big difference.

i do know there will be no side trim on her, no wheelwell trim, just the regular 65 Dart hood trim and candy canes, with 66 Barracuda fender mounted turn signals. Wheels - gotta use what i have - a set of 4 14 inch chrome Magnum 500‘s (which do clear the rear disc brakes!)

I started on some of the tailgate reassembly yesterday after the wife and I got back from running around. I had left the old latches in place while being painted. Got them removed by the hardest as the rod connecting them acts as a torsion bar. The replacement cad plated latches went in so easy compared to the removal process. Got both sides secured and everything operates so much smoother compared to Before I started

although not secured, I had to see what the access panel looked like sitting on the side you see from inside the car or when the gate is lowered

Started on installing a few things today as much as my back and hip would let me. First thing was the V8 gas pedal bracket that gets the DMT pre-cut foam gasket between the bracket and firewall. Thanks goes to Jerry @sgrip65 for the superb reproduction of the mounting plate that holds the bracket on the firewall. Made of aluminum, it will never rust like the original steel plate.

Besides the 3 nuts on the built in studs, you can barely see the shanks of the 2 bolts protruding on the far left and bottom through the, as @toolmanmike called it - the “horseshoe shaped bracket”. The 3rd hole on the right is a blind hole to the inside bracket.

Next was to install all the AC firewall insulation pad kit I bought from DMT. I can highly recommend this kit as it is head and shoulders above the kit I bought from REM quite some time ago

While out this morning at the paint supply place, I picked some heavy duty internal toothed washers with the hole In them just a skosh smaller than the hinge pegs. Now the hood hinges are nice and tight ready to install the hood and hydraulic lifts I fitted a few years ago. My, how time fly’s when you’re having fun!

Finally, I got both B Pillar latches installed - not tight since they will need adjustment when the doors get installed. The latches along with the mounting screws had previously been cad plated

As my friend Ulf @65dartcharger says, the fun is continuing

Is this thing not runnin down the road YET? lol

Lookin great!

not sure if your kidding, so i'll say it anyway :), you should still scrub out the oil holes with brushes.

i did check with the machine shop and he said “I always tell people when they pick up a crank to clean out the oil holes”. He didn’t mention a thing when i picked one up from him - did he forget, assume or ???? Irregardless, I’ve always done a thorough cleaning on any motor parts from any machine shop just in case. Thanks for the reminder!

Next thing to add to the firewall is the driver’s side fresh air vent. I bought one with a working door hinge as so many are broken - the one originally on the car was missing the door all together. The vent needed to be cleaned, old hard foam Seal removed, door stripped of runny paint, painted and maybe even a quick coat of black on the vent. After removing the old foam seal and hand sanding the vent as well as the door, it got a couple light coats of satin black paint, new foam on the inside of the door and new foam seal on top. The seals were another super item from DMT - no they’re not sponsoring me - they’ve got great products that actually work and fit as they should. Vent Is now ready to install tomorrow!
