Before the Earth caught on fire and went stupid, I would try to rent a Dacia Duster whenever I went to that region.
It's a Czech built Renault, but seemed reliable enough.
For some reason, Jeeps are super popular in the Med.

I drove a very new at the time Renault duster in India (they are badged as Renault in that market) back in 2018. They are quiet and comfortable and feel very solid. The one i drive was pretty much brand new at the time so it will be interesting if they age gracefully.
