Now that the '65 Formula S is newly painted and hood/fenders aligned, it's almost time to reinstall the motor and 904 transmission. Do I need to remove the hood (which I usually do) to install the motor or the motor/transmission? Thank you. (just have the everyday cherry picker and jack stands-will not be removing the K-member).

Can be done but man I would be seriously careful. I would pull the hood if it was me.

I do it by myself every few years , just the engine only ,on my ‘69.

Not unless you have hood hinges from 58 thru 60’s Dodge pickup

Seriously doubt you can install with the hood on. .
Think it can be done, but car has to be pretty high as engine need a pretty steep angle to go in. A good engine tilter is a must.

Engine alone will definitely will go in.

I can say that it can be done on a 67 with the exhaust manifolds on.
Go slow and try it.

Well I deleted my doubt post after seeing it being done. Looks alot harder to not mess up the paint , but it can be done, I guess.

If you remove the hood, just mark it with a pencil. The bolts will leave their respective positions. It should realign easily then.
Looks real nice!

You could drop it out the bottom.
You could simply make a mark on the hood at the hinges to put it back in the same place..
If they didn't remove the hood to paint the car it's going to be obvious where it was..
I've seen people drill little 16th inch pin holes through the hinge and into the hood to be able to put a line up pin back in..

I never remove the hood. Haven't in probably 25 or more years. I leave the hood on even if I'm pulling the tranny with it.

Beside a V8, I have even pulled and installed a slant without pulling the hood with the wife’s help with her working the hoist

Motor drops in Ok with hood on,with my home-built low-profile tilter. I think I could do engine/trans together, with my tilter, but after the last time, I swore I was gonna make the core-support top bar removable.
To do both together today; I would for sure get a helper........ and if I get a helper, we're taking the hood off. At age 54 I could easily take the hood off myself; but that was a long time ago.

I have done it plenty of times with hood on. I usually put a blanket on the end of the engine hoist because it may lightly contact the hood. On something with nice paint I would just remove the hood, so much easier and less worry.

How do you feel about "the factory way?" Put the engine on the K member, on a jig, from underneath?

Did the engine and trans together on my 66 Valiant. Slow and steady, capn, and a good cranking tilt bar and it’s a snap job

I have done it on my 69 440 ‘cuda with the transmission attached but I also removed the two front hinge bolts in order to lift the hood a little higher.

You've got really nice, new pretty paint. Why chance it? Four bolts and it's off. Put blankets around the corners to keep from scratching the fenders and take the hood off. I have no idea why anyone would want to leave it on when it gives you so much more room to work around things.

I'm doing this work without a helper. I decided to install the motor and transmission together. When a carpenter shows up around here to do some door fabrication for the house, I will ask him to help me remove and store the hood.

I marked around the bolt holes which should help a little bit upon re-installation. But that hidden plate behind the bolts seems to move around freely when the hood is not installed (it does have a set-screw, actually small bolt, that holds it in place which can just barely be seen in far left of second photo).

Change of plan, I installed the transmission first. Only problem now (with the motor installed today) is the 904 tail shaft is too far over to the passenger side as can be seen looking up at the tunnel.

I tried engine installation with the block motor mount brackets snugged up but found no fore/aft movement which made it impossible to drop the motor mounts in the K-member slots. Once I loosened the brackets on both sides, the motor mounts dropped in and the transmission torque convertor hub could finally mate with the crankshaft. Right now as it stands, the motor mount brackets are still as loose as I left them to accommodate the installation.
