What was I thinking? Trying to unscrew nuts that had been through 32 years of Ohio winters.

Anyway, first one was my original plan, second one is what actually went down. But I'm sure that's happened to you.

Yup. One of THE most hated jobs The last three times I tore U bolts off a leaf spring/ axle, I was, amoung other things, adding more leafs, so I needed longer U bolts. Easy. Just cut em LOL

Count me in. The springs on my 66 were pretty saggy. I had a pair of helper springs I took off another car so I thought, can't take more than an hour to install them. Wrong........ Two days later of slave labor I finally got the old U-bolts off. Easily the most miserable thing I've done so far. Next time I will cut them off and replace them.

I learned a long time ago, if they arent shiny, cut em. A set of 4 is like $30 canadian so why bust a nut trying to save crusty u bolts?

I never planned on re-using them. I just didn't wanna risk cutting into the axle tube, backing plate, or perches. Which I didn't do anyway. Just thought wrenching may have been easier. Nope.

Gonna delete the iso-clamp system anyway

I nicked a tube more than once. Quick weld and finish it with a grinder. No biggie.

i feel for you guys that live in Rustopia. i've never had to cut U bolts to get them off :D

I used alot of different ways to take this car apart, it was parked in 1976 in the woods, from rust issues.

I've had to cut off a few rust belt u-bolts, but, mostly it was just a matter of wire brush, running a die over the exposed threads, lots of WD40, and a good impact wrench to work them back and forth a bit. A thermal wrench (torch) can help too.

I have a wire brush. That's about it
