Over budget 318 build

Your heads shaft oil, not pushrod oil. Do yourself a favor and call Mike at B3 and let him sell you rockers and the geometry correction kit you will NEED.

EDIT: forgot you have a magnum block. So you need to pushrod oil and you still need to call Mike.
This is an LA 318. Not a magnum. I’ll for sure be contacting them when the time comes.
 
I thought I read on speedmaster website that the heads I got require oil through pushrods.

They don't know....
Look at your heads and you should see the oil hole in the the rocker stands. 4th stand from the left if looking at the intake side of the head.

The Speedmaster site is wrong..
Even more embarrassing about their own head... You don't need oil through pushrods which means you can run solid lifters with adjustable rockers..
Which if you did that you could take your cam and have it ground into whatever you wanted it. Get mechanical lifters.. maybe some 273 rockers which would be inexpensive. Relatively speaking of course.. then of course once all of that is in place you can get a measurement for your pushrods and have Smith Brothers make you a set..
You should be able to get a good set of 273 rockers for under 200.. not sure about the solid lifters.. but if you call Ken at Oregon cam and have him grind your cam it cost me about $79 for the regrind. He may have some lifters for you also. And he will grind you a cam given you give him all the information about your car and what your personal expectations are of it... Not what the Forum thinks you ought to do but what you want...
and the Smith Brothers pushrods used to be about a hundred and thirty-five but now they're just under 200 I think for a custom set.. they will send you a single push rod that you can use as a template and it's adjustable..

Then it oils like any other Chrysler non magnum small block. I have one set of 273 rockers left and they will probably sit on the shelf.

For the amount of money it takes to correct the ratio and you will still need to buy adjusters, and those adjusters will be the ball type rather than a cup, and you will still have to correct the geometry...way more work than they are worth. Even more money if your Bush them.

That’s why I said let Mike hook you up and it will be much simpler and it will be correct when you put it together.
 
This is some very good information guys. I would like to say lets not get ahead of ourselves yet here. I don't even have the rings on the pistons yet. Id like to take this one step at a time and not get derailed here.

My next step is to file fit the rings... @RustyRatRod chimed in and is agreement that that .030 that I mentioned earlier for the gap should be good. So according to the chart that I posted, that's what I am going for. Will that be only the top ring? I will be following the gap line set for nitrous.

KB has second ring recommendations as well. It's "somewhere" on the United Engine and Machine web site. It'll be close to the top ring......I usually just do them both the same, but you need to look to be sure.

That chart has the 2nd ring end gap as well. It's a little bit different than the top ring.
 
Most replacement lifters for an LA series have the hole in them for pushrod oiling anyway. So you're good there either way

I never saw that the first time around. :thankyou: Also I called UEM to make sure my measurements were correct. They said .030 is the minimum so I can even take it a couple thousands more. I think Ill shoot for .031-.032. The second ring does have end gap of .005 per inch of bore min for a boosted engine. So with my 3.94 bore x .005 I get .0197 minimum. So shooting for .020 works for me!

Ok so I have the top rings all gaped to .032 other than one. It ended up .033. I think it’ll be fine. However I checked my second ring gap and they are all reading .023 on the passenger side and .024 (tight but does fit in) on the driver side. Now what? Or will this be ok? How much of a difference would it make being the second ring and it calls for .019 minimum?

If the sheet calls for .019 and you’re at .024, in my opinion it’s good to go. Send it.
 

Yep. If you stick a wire or something in that hole you’ll see where it comes out the bottom. Notice the corresponding hole on the deck of the engine block. Oils through the head just like any old LA head.


Yes sir, and like SSG Karg said you can check it with a wire or spray some cleaner through it. It is also a good idea to make sure the corresponding holes in the block are good and clean, and that the shop got the cam bearing holes aligned with them.

Thank you sir! And yes the bearing holes are aligned. When I got it back I made sure to run a brush through all the oil passages. I’ll do a check on corresponding holes tomorrow!

I was actually going to suggest .034 but I knew the dogs would come out and tell me how stupid I was.
 
A little Extra ring gap wont hurt.

When i was a teen i read it as gap the top ring .075, ran like a bat out of hell.

On the other hand i run my 4.070 340 at .032 and just leave the 2nd ring alone.
Done it many times with the 3.31 and 9.5-10.1 comp w/kb's.
 
I was actually going to suggest .034 but I knew the dogs would come out and tell me how stupid I was.
I don't have a problem pulling them out and taking them to .034. Wouldn't take but a half hour. I'd rather do it now then crack a ring land later... Think I should?
