The classic TA car that won that race was a 64 Pontiac Tempest, The Gray Ghost. Guy drove it harder in the corners.
They all take off and then I'm at past the backside straightaway at turn 9 waiting for the cars to come around the corner. We hear the car(s) and this guy comes hauling around the corner with his inside wheel almost off the ground, then the next car and pack is like 5 seconds behind him on the first lap! He continues his dominance over Barracudas, a Dart, a few Mustangs and even the favorite a yellow Z28. Kind a boring as most of these $$$ restored cars were just doing laps together but this Pancho was running balls out. There was actually a rub between 2 cars in a tight corner on the Jumbotron and the crowd went crazy, "Ooooh nooo!"

Welcome aboard @Dale Davies !!!!
Glad you were searching that long ago. Nice find on the old thread. Don’t mind the dead thread comments, there replies should be coupled with this —>:poke:

Go introduce yourself in the new guy forum and post up some of your pictures of your ride!

The crank stroke was reduced to 2.97" giving 304 CID. I knew a racer running a Boss Mustang out of Vancouver, BC and met his friend from Seattle that ran a Z28 Camaro. Both used 9000 RPM red line but could push to 9500 to pass or keep from being passed. The Dodge and Plymouths ran 9500 but could be pushed to 10,000 RPM. The mandated carb was a special Holley that had the throttle plate size specified that gave about 820 CFM, but was expensive. John's team gave up a couple of HP and used the very common Holley 780.

I was just wondering what the combo was .. I was watching the old trans am racers and got curios on building a repo of the old barracuda
If it is your dream to build a 5 liter SBM engine for the street and or track you should do it, I would love to see it done. They were some great very successful 5 litre engines like the Z28 and Boss 302. The TransAm series is rich in our history.
If you cant follow dreams life is going to be very dull.

wish i could find the pic of the engine , had a low rise crossram intake , i wanted to buy it but no way they would sell . sounded mean as could be . hope the OP uilds his dream , if i had a few more $$ i'd build a Ritter alu block and destroke it so i could run 9000 + rpm , no way a stock block valvetrain can hit 9000 unless you are a rocket scientist like ohyeah

The other short stroke crank for an LA motor is the forged crank from a 301 ci Poly motor. It's a bolt in except that it has the 8 bolt Hemi crank bolt pattern so an easy swap with a hemi flex plate.

interesting thanks

isn't the bolting surface of the crank in an different spot then modern cranks ?

You mean where the torque converter or flywheel bolt up? There are different dimensions for what’s bolted to it.
I forget, I don’t remember exactly what it is.

The crank flange is farther back because the torque convertor had studs that went forward through the flange.

It's no secret, 4.04 bore and a 2.97 stroke crank. Not the hot set up unless you are running a class that is pounds per cubic inch. Besides, you'd have to wind the snot out of it to make any power, 9000+ RPM. And that kind of RPM is not viable with 59 degree lifter blocks so why would you care anyway?
Right from the .outh of a guy that raced a Boss 302 in the Trans Am series; they could run the Ford and Chevy 3" stroke engines to 9,000 RPM and 9,500 RPM to get past another or prevent being passed. The destroked Mopar 340s at 2.97" were red lined at 9,500 RPM but could be pushed to 10,000 RPM. Lifter angle did not seem to be a problem for them.
I was a Corner Marshal at Edmonton International Speedway. Between these Trans Am cars and the Group 7 Sports Racing CanAm cars, what a rush. Usually worked long 1 corner. With 3/4 of a mile straight, those CanAm cars were up to 220MPH approaching the corner.

You have to WANT to be a mopar guy (or gal)!
I know where a Challenger is parked in the bush on an acreage. Belongs to the guy's brother in law who does not want to sell, yet. Go back and talk each year and see what happens.
I had some photos from the track of the Boss 302 Racing Team, Fogg Motors Mustang from 1970. Also had a great photo of the Penske Porsche 917 30K CanAm car in the paddock after Saturday practice. One car had the bodywork on and the other had the bodywork removed. Great photo. Ex wife got all the photos mixed up with hers and out of the envelopes with the negatives. They got lost in the divorce.
My car is a 1940 Ford Fordor, that I am freshening the 289 up. Looking to narrow a 8.8 rear axle with Traction Lock and 3.55 gears. Also an AOD transmission with the wide ratio gears in it.
If I can get that Challenger I will be happy as I always liked them. The T/A with the 340 six pack was my fav.
Got some Chevies, a 39 Pontiac 2dr and a couple of 52 Austin A40s. I have an aluminum 215 Buick to put in one Austin. Thinking a 3800 Buick supercharged for the other. Maybe get Audi 6spd transaxles and build an IRS for them.
I can appreciate all models and makes, as long as the steering and brakes are up to the HP under the hood. Always bad when the car is faster than the cranium holding the steering wheel.
