Base timing. Really ?

My 451 (currently iron heads, 10.3:1, pump gas), [email protected] cam, will begin to fight the starter when hot at about 25 degrees. It would start fine at 22-24 degrees but didn't have enough idle vacuum.

I set up my distributor to crank at 16 and immediately advance to 27 at 1200 rpm idle. No problems.
