Looking up definitions of "castle nut" and "slotted nut" I read they are made to accommodate cotter pins. The nut I am asking about has slits much too small to fit a cotter pin. What is it called and why the slits? Thank you.

Split lock nut.

The slits allow the top of the nut to be crimped to a smaller diameter. It then acts like a nylock

^^^^ Yep, they are only to be used one time... LOL^^^
But anyway they cut the nut then crimp it so it's like a removable lock nut without the cotter pin. The more you use them they will get looser. There are many different type split nuts also. VW used them a lot.

I have seen them used as a safety wire locking nut retainers when I was in the service in my past life but that was used as a patch. Any real safety wire locking nut retainers had holes drilled through them.

It's called a "Slotted Nut". Safety wire can be used in lieu of pin. Some have slots in the nut for the purpose of a lock nut application, where torque must be applied.

My 51 Fargo has them all over. Fine thread too.

Thanks for the replies, Wiki of course, has the low-down:

A split beam nut, also known as a split hex nut[1] or slotted beam nut,[2] is a locknut with slots cut in the top that separate the outside end into two[3] or more sections that are bent slightly inward, making the thread diameter undersized in the slotted portion. As the nut is threaded on, these sections are forced back out to their original position and increase the friction between the nut and the fastener, creating the locking action.

Not sure, but I think Mopar used them on exhaust head pipe flanges from the factory.

yeah, I love it when the cheap *** bolt head clip breaks on the other side of the exhaust flange and these just spin the bolt.
