1972 Dodge Colt

I remember red Colt! It was in a few magazines, nicely done for sure.
I wonder if that Anglia was the one that Jim Whit and Bob Brown ran? It was in an Anglia Wagon and then moved from E/Altered to L/Gas in a Cricket Wagon.
This is my 3rd Colt also, but the first one that I will able to get somewhere with.
Let's see how this one works out.

One of my sons lives in Scottsdale and I have a good friend in Tucson. I was coming out to help the Vixen crew for the No Prep series in Tucson before the covid closed them down. If they come back next year, we should try and link up.

Lots of great comments and lots of slant fans! Met some great FABO folks, Demonracer,383Duster, and I am sure some I didn't know. Some things I need to fix on the hood, I could see the center flapping on the trailer at 70 miles an hour! Thanks Bill and friends for helping unload and load the Colt at the show!

Worked on the drivers side door and quarter window. I need a source for generic window felt or fuzzy for my quarter windows, it's a big gap.
Started removing the Dana.
Need all new bolts and Rod End Bearings.
I have been having good results from Speedway Motors for that stuff.

Anyone have a Koni shock rebuilder?

Thanks I will give that a shot. The shocks are only 40+ years old, why wouldn't they service them!!!

Yep had the same lifting problem with the hood on my 68 cuda . It was a hood I bought from a guy that was replacing hood and fenders on a factory 68 hemi cuda . This was years ago . When I ran the car for the first time with 4 hood pins , one on each corner just like the factory did . At 125 mph it would lift about 3 inches in the middle , I added 4 more pins and this stopped . You just need to add more snaps in front and back , also looking at your intake I see that there are 2 stands in the middle , maybe add a few to the middle to keep the hood down at speed . Just thinking . John
 
Thanks Will, I remember you told me that. I think the shocks are ok, they just need the little bushings and rod balls at the ends. I am still looking for a shock dyno here in Dallas to tell me where they are set at.
 
funnykarman, I am thinking a couple of buttons from the rad support to either side of the rib in the hood will do it. Not going to have a scoop so it should stay down at the speeds I am going to be running.
Those 2 towers are for the throttle linkage, I think it will be ok after the front is down.
Also going to seal the grill top so the air goes through the rad and not up to the bottom of the hood.
 
The Dana is out now. The axle ends I don't recognize, not passenger Mopar for sure. I need an axle puller to get them out and remove the backing plates. I will measure it then.

Think about adding a couple to the back side of the hood as well a couple up front edge of the hood , I put 10 on my red Colt and it had a big hole for the blower . just my thought , my hood for the 68 cuda was thick and the glass make today is a lot thinner .

. a long piece of chain bolted to a lug with the other end bolted to sledge hammer works. just don' t heve anyone standing close by. put a packing blanket over the axle too
 
I got them out, not used to the big ford ends on the Dana.
Working on getting the bearings off as the don't clear the backing plates.
 
So I got the Dana cleaned today. How in the H can a drag car get a part that dirty? I have seen 300K mile trucks with less crap on it than this rear. I do have a couple ideas, ford Dana rears have the cover screws drilled all the way through. Oil can run through those tread and get on the back side. And I guess if you never wipe it down, it just gets worse.
Then today I discovered using the Strange Catalog that the Dana ends I have are not ford, but are olds. I guess when one of the PO's changed from disks to drums (Why?) they cut the tops flat on the axle ends, making them look like big ford. After getting the axles and backing plates off I can see the cuts. And of course they aren't the same. But good to know I need olds bearings to replace the ones I am getting removed tomorrow.

Do the Olds ends use larger bearings than the Ford? Axles at that point larger in diameter? Or original builder had left over Olds axles...
 
Don't know yet, everything was crudy, so after they come off I will measure them.
The axle should be the one that Hardy built back in '73.
But these axles are 35 spline aftermarket with thread in axle studs.

Did get some great news on my Colt history today.
Entry list for Indy in 1980.
Shows my Colt as a 1975 model for the 5 year rule.
Look at this list of Pro Stocks, Glidden had switched back from the Arrow a few races before.

Bearings came off today.
I sat down for an hour or so with the Strange Catalog.
I am calling tomorrow and order what I need for the rear brakes.
 
The man who built my Colt has died. Don Hardy died unexpectedly yesterday. I was able to meet the man last year and spent an afternoon with him and his son. It was an honor and I will be always thankful to be able to meet him. An Army Veteran and a huge influence on the Drag Racing world. Mr. Hardy built many MOPAR cars during the 60's to the early 80's. A life well lived. Rest In Peace Mr. Hardy.

Which kit did you order from Strange? I have a Dana with drum brakes that I want to convert to disk. I have a Strange Spool & axles, and as far as I know it has the mopar end plates, but I haven't disassembled anything yet, so that's not a 100% certainty.

I ordered B1700WC2S, which is a drag race brake kit for Olds Axle ends.
The S is SS disk rotors.
It comes with a set of Billit Caliper brackets that are bearing retainers and caliper mounts.
Also ordered Axle bearings which are Green Bearing Company, and they are sealed
and have o-rings for tube seals and a seal on the outboard side of the bearing.
Soft Pads.

Stan. those look like the old Hurst/Airheart disc setup from the 60s & 70s. I wonder if Strange bought the rights to those?

Thanks for sharing those photos with me. That's exactly what I need. Of course I'll need to verify what housing ends I have and then order the appropriate kit.
