I love 318’s. Hence the name. ;)
A late 80’s Factory roller cam block, W2 headed with a solid roller would be my choice.

or maybe the speed masters I just got. Mmmhhhmmm

I would LOVE to see a W2 headed 318. Talk about a rev monster.

To me for a hot street strip engine would be around 1.2-1.3 hp per cid which would put peak power around 6000-6500 rpm, so 323 would be 390-420 hp. If you want more power than that or don't want to gear and stall it properly i'd really think about going bigger.

Know it's not a 318 but Richard Holdener just did a 460 hp 327 with a really good powerband

I just seen that video about 3 hours after he posted it.
A 318 @ .060 overbore and some KB forged domed slugs, add the rest up like Richard did.
:( as a huge 318 fan it disappoints this got turned upside down and inside out.
They Normally do....

Read the first quoted answer.....
Sounds like we are on our way to the mysterious 500 hp 318 build topic again....

What does a 318 have to do with "How would U make the lightest and fastest car to ever exist on earth?"

Drive it at least 30 miles to the track, run 12’s, drive it home. That’s badass in my book.

I`M MORE IMPRESSED BY ONE THAT DRIVES TO THE TRACK , RUNS 10`S OR BETTER, THEN GETS DRIVEN HOME , NATURALLY ASPERATED.

Mine not yet, working on it , tuff w/ street gearing .

3100# with 400 hp will get you to 11.53 @ 117 mph. 400 horse is fairly streetable and easy to get to.

Your ET / MPH computed from your vehicle weight of 3100 pounds and HP of 400 is 11.53 seconds and MPH of 117.24 MPH.

That depends on fairly excellent traction !

If you can drive it across 3 states and run pump gas and go race it, it's probably not all that wild of a combo. My 318 has compression close to 11:1 and iron heads, so it's not going to be super happy on 93/94 octane at a race scenario. I keep 110 in it due to this reason, but also because it can be had out of the pump and keeps great, so technically it's a "pump gas" engine. I'm not advertising it as such, I'll tell everybody and their brother it's 110 octane. Could I drive it across 3 states on pump gas? Maybe, but I'll probably never find out for sure.

Anything above 93 aint exactly pump gas , even if it is pumped !

Best available pump gas is 93. Anything else from a pump that is higher and available to the general public isn’t happening. Only the track has a higher octane and I don’t call that pump gas.

Pump 91 is the highest in Ca so that would be it

Was the same here for the most part , untill a new dodge dealer that sells a few hellcats moved in , then they built a kum n go down the street from it , w/93 pump real gas. About 2 1/2 miles from my house.

peoples convenets store(small chain in southern va) got chevron 108 and 112 from pumps 6 miles from me! but for all intents and purposes "pump gas" is 93!

Let me preface my remarks by saying that i have never messed with a small block mopar.
I think the 318 reputation suffers from never having a prformance version, unlike the 302 ford and 327 chevy, virtually the same size engines.
I would think that a 318, with the right aftermarket parts, such a cam ,compression, and cyl heads could have comparable output, even though there are many more choices for parts for the 302/327.
I dont think a streetable 420hp is too difficult with the ford or chevy, so i would expect that from a 318 too. Wallac3 says a 420hp engine in a 3200lb a-body (including driver weight) should go 11.50/118. I think that is wildly optimistic for a normal street driven a-body. I would consider a n/a 318 that runs low 12s a darn good runner, even very high elevens would be a killer.
The calculator i use says a 12.50 car at 3300 lbs needs about 340 crank horsepower, not even 1.1 for a 318.

That may be true, but that shouldn’t count. As stated, pump gas available from anywhere. Safeway, Rotten Robbie, Am/PM, etc etc.
Yea I tend to agree with you. Pump gas to me means 87,89,91. But if you didn’t know it was available and wanted the option to use it I thought you’d like to know.

LMAO! I was just saying in my head, does it really matter to you if you made his list?!?!?
