Admits the body VIN is different than the dash VIN so it isn't even a "legal" vehicle.............
Seems to me, sadly is that what we have is a VERY expensive "parts car"

NOT MINE!!! Click the link there are a few photos.............

well, he has a title, and most of the car matches

as long as there isnt someone around with a title that matches the rest of the car?

Not that I know B bodies that well, seems a little steep for what it is.

I think he's delusional. The car is illegal in probably all 50 states. He's simply counting on somebody bein stupid enough to buy it. Also, he does have a point in that no one at the tag office or the like would probably ever inspect it to find otherwise.

From what he said, the only thing that "matches" is the title and dash

The picture of the body stamp isn't real clear so check me if I'm wrong but it appears to be 101035 and the fender tag is 101095. Now I understand that the car is a rebody and that the body numbers are aren't going to match the fender tag and title but how weird is it that the rebody numbers are that close?

It wouldn’t take long to determine if the car has been VIN switched and is an old reported stolen car.

Any auto theft investigator with both VIN’s could call NICB (National Insurance Crime Bureau) and do a record search. NICB records last forever, they don’t go away. This is how cars that were stolen decades ago get recovered and returned to their rightful owners.

This piece meal car could be that some smuck decided to put something together and sell it, or, it was stolen years ago and put on ice till they thought it safe to put it up for sale. Until somebody runs both VIN’s, nobody will know.

Perhaps someone in the northern Idaho area knows someone that is an auto theft investigator that can put a bug in someones ear and if it is stolen, some lucky guy/gal may get their car back.

Bottom line: Buyer beware,

I had a vehicle like that come into my bay once for a safety inspection. I called the cops. They did the homework and came back with a VIN of their own, which I dutifully riveted on, as they watched.
I have a 68 Barracuda with matching body vins, that I have a bill of sale for dated 1978, but that car was never registered by me. I went to the DMV and searched the VIN and found it clear.
I parted out a rolled 70 Duster back in the 70s, and kept the Rally dash. Which I wanted to install in my Barracuda. So I swapped the legal VIN onto the 70 dash.
The engine came out of a 71 Monaco, that I also owned, registered, drove, and eventually parted out. That Monaco also supplied it's rearend, which I narrowed to fit.
The 4-speed transmission came out of a 69 FormulaS that I still own, was registered by me, and sits on blocks .
I went to the copshop in about 1997 with my story, prior to starting the project and they said it would be fine. That was a long time ago.
The Vin, the fender-tags, and the body-stamps all match. But the fender tags say 225/904, console, yada yada; whereas the engine is a 367, and trans is now a Commando gearset in an unstamped Passon alloy box.

Maybe this CL guy did the same thing. IDK jus saying. Sometimes all is not how it first appears.

My buddy bought a car 40 years ago. Later he suspected it was a stolen car. He took the vin to the police. They weren’t interested in checking it out. That was 5 or 6 years ago. It’s not on the road yet but I hope he doesn’t have any problems when it’s registered. It was a 318/904/725 car. Now it’s much different. Kim

172 pages of profanities and insults... the first page was enough for me :realcrazy: (of course that describes a lot of threads on YB)...

Well the point was and there is a LOT of good information in there if you dig it out. It's about a car that was stolen and gone for "I forget" 13 years? And then suddenly turned up in a rich collector guy's garage with a lame excuse. It's about the fact that a car once stolen should be ALWAYS stolen unless the real owner gets it back

I sold my 70 Charger SE 383 magnum that I had owned since the late 70s
5 yrs ago for 16,700. I had the original window sticker , build sheet and bill of sale . Prices for chargers are plain STUPID now ! They will come back down.
