90's Durango - Mechanic told friend to scrap

if it were closer to me I would possibly be interested in it as a roller..... when I was done it would no longer have a 4.7 in it. I know it would take the motor, the trans and the whole wiring harness and computer but Id find a way to put a 5.9/360 in there..... just like my current 01 has under its hood.

Ok, bringing this back. Here is a video of it cranking.

It's at his house and we can tow it to mine, to dig in further, but want to be sure first. No. 7 had zero compression, not sure if that would prevent it from starting (however I hadn't checked 2,4,6,8 yet) Of 1,3,5,7 90 was the lowest and 120 was the highest, he had spark and fuel.

He doesn't have much money, but is willing to spend up to a grand in on this or something else. I can't find anything in that price range, worth a dang.

239k should we keep digging?

From your cranking video it sounds like it’s out of time and has a (couple maybe) dead hole.

Thanks for the reply. The more I think about it with the mileage, I am not sure it would be worth it to dig in further. I found a bunch of videos about the valve keeper or rocker arm popping off, plus you're right about it being out of time. Something had to have happened on the inside the front cover, or maybe the cam gear.

To be honest I’ve never owned or worked on a 4.7. Only heard the stories and read the posts. But I have worked on a lot of stuff that has slipped time and that’s what they sound like. And a 4.7 is an interference engine and if it slips time it will bend stuff. Sounds like that’s what’s going on. Is it worth fixing? From what I’ve read, no. But I’ve proven that wrong doing my own work in the past so you probably could with a few trips to the wrecking yard and some new parts.

My guess is the guide is ate up because it's never been changed and that allowed the chain to jump, bending some valves. You'll only be in it for your time to take the front cover off and see.

Definitely a dead cylinder. Which you already confirmed with a compression test. Pull the valve cover to see if a follower came off. If it did, reinstall, see what happens. If everything is in it's place, junk it.
