1972 are first year, one piece, plastic.
1968-71 are 2 piece metal plus “vinyl” press in top
Either will work

And the metal and plastic do interchange, No corrosion & and a pound lighter... just sayin'

Maybe Joel means the metal piece is one and the rubber top seal is two?

Are the plastic ones the same as the metal ones? Mine are metal on the car.
