I am going to weld floor pans in my 72 D100. This will be the first time I ever tried welding. I think I can cut out the old and fit the new pans. I think I will lap weld them in instead of butt welding. Anyway, there is a gas tank behind the front seat in the truck. What should I do, cover it with a welding blanket or drain it and remove it? Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks FABO.

Drain it and remove it. You live everyday. You only die once.

I always use flashing in between the gas tank and my welds. Flashing like what you use on a roof. Keep a water spray bottle nearby of course.

It only takes one little bead of welding splatter to land in the wrong place. Remove the tank and eliminate the risk.

There's always that moment where it's too late to change the results....don't be that guy. Just the fact that you're asking that question is already a warning to yourself. Just my opinion

In confined area like a cab, i would likely remove fuel tank. i did cab corners on an f250 last week, box was off and filler neck was right beside my head as i was welding.i bagged the open filler neck and covered it with a wet towel. Could smell fumes while i was welding.hard on the nerves..

3 things to know about the properties of gasoline: Remember, gasoline VAPORS ignite, not the liquid.
The liquid is ALWAYS giving off ignitable vapors, (unless its below -45°).
The vapors are heavier than air and will DROP down, seeking an ignition source.

Remove the tank. On that tank the vent line I believe goes up into the b pillar than returns out side thru the floor. Not worth the risk.

Use your common sense, don't be foolish, remove the tank & work in a well ventilated area.

that did not work.jpeg

I always figured those custom exhaust guy are darn brave. Has anyone every taken an old Mpar (Chevies don't leak!?) to that guy with a small pinhole in top of the gas tank!???
Those guys have noses like a Radon gas detector. They smell some fume and send ya home...... or some just weld away!!
I have place wet rags over vented gas on truck and welded away.
Years ago I was back in my home town in W Ga visiting my old mom and looking for a project to haul back to Mo. I found the typical running 69 RR for$1000. I puled the tank and it had a couple of small pinhole in what was otherwise a sold tank. A guy I went to HS had a welding shop. I took the tank there and he put it over exhaust of running tractor while we partook of a cold one (or two). Then he brazed the holes shut. Yes the fumes dried out any gas fumes.
Some all it Southern enginuity, others just call it redneck! ha
Me, I always pull the tank now days. 99% of the time buy a new one and sender.

Hey I lit my hair on fire welding underneath my brothers monte carlo SS. Had to get a short haircut after that to fix the lopsided burnt spot. Does that count? I have a welders cap I use with my helmet now.

This appears to be a hit and run.

It's not usually the burns that kill you......it's the horrible infection that sets in a week or so later while you're in the burn center! :realcrazy:
