Got to work this morning and tried to park my truck, but it stayed in drive. The shift lever in the cab would move, but not "click" between gears. It was kinda just flapping in the breeze. I had to lay down in six inches of snow and manually put it in park. From there, I can start it up and select any gear I want one time, then back to a sloppy shift lever.

Gonna inspect the linkage either at work today, or when I get home. Is there any specific location I should start looking? Perhaps a problem area, known for failure? Thanks

Sounds like all the linkage is hooked up yet, so, I wonder if the detent ball and spring popped out from be hind the rooster comb on the valve body? That is what gives the "feel" of each gear.

Dang it, I was hoping for somewhere OUTSIDE the transmission. If all else fails, and the linkage appears to be working, I'll have to check that. Be a good time to adjust bands and change the filter too I guess

What is your truck? Where is shifter mounted.

thinking here.
It won’t leave drive from the lever.
It will leave park to drive

So it will move the trans one way bit freewheeling the other way. It will push but not pull.

I don’t think it’s inside the trans at all. I think it’s a late model cable shift that is broken inside.

88 dakota. I hadn't even gotten as far as to check if it's cable or linkage. Thanks

Glad it was a simple fix. Those are the best!
