I’ve heard from multiple people you can rebuild these things in the dirt with no tools, others say you need a damn precision dial indicator, so I don’t know much, I didn’t use a dial indicator on this one to check end play, I just ran with it. Hopefully it’ll shift. I don’t know.

Don't go to that much trouble on my account. I'll figure something else out. As I remember, second gear is a strut style synchronizer rather than the cone style that 3rd and 4th use. Like an idiot, thinking because I had the FSM I didn't have to pay attention, I just took it apart. When it came time to reassemble it, the FSM is vague and as I mentioned, second gear has never shifted right. As to the transmission itself, you have to pay attention to the clearances on the 3rd and 4th synchonizers or they will not work. I found this out on an NP420 I worked on. There were other bearings that you needed to set the end play on (tapered rollers) IIRC. But it's been a number of years and the memory is the first thing to go.
