Young friend of mine bought a 73 Road Runner last fall. Survivor body but 340 was supposed to have been rebuilt. He ended up buying it for 12,500, about half of what the guy had it listed for. He drove it quite a bit for a weekend (he loved it) then it stalled suddenly at a traffic light. Engine wouldn't turn over so he had it towed. He took it to his resto shop but they don't do engines as they farm those out. Their "guy" is booked up and can't do it.

By the way, he was a Ford guy but I've rubbed off on him because his last 2 buys have been a 73 400 Charger and this 73 340 RR. That's his 69 Torino GT beside my 68.

Well, I kinda volunteered to do the rebuild. Supposedly the engine is very hard to turn with a breaker bar. I hope to see it within the next week. He sent me pictures yesterday of a rag they pulled out of the distributor hole. (See attached)

My plan is to put it on an engine stand and disassemble it to see what the damage is and what bore size we're working with. I have 2 machine shops I trust to do whatever machining is needed.

So looking forward, if the crank is wasted, it makes sense to stroke it for this heavy B body and he loves power. (727 and 8-3/4) I'll most likely look for a complete stroker kit with crank, bearings, pistons and probably rods. Street cruiser with occasional fun runs so cast crank is fine. I'll post more when I know more but right now just doing some pre-planning.

I have enough projects going so to make it easy on myself I'm looking for recommendations for a good kit.
Scat or Eagle?

Scat kit. Go with the 4” crank IMO.
That rag really was in the motor? Maybe part of it got pulled in and jammed up the worx

Yeah 4" for sure.
He said that rag was pulled out. I'll know more when I see it in person but I'm thinking the oil pump drive may have broken and starved the engie of oil.

Interested in knowing more about where the rest of rag was found and/or what it damaged. Amazing it ran with that in there to begin with.
