I texted my friend and told him to keep the heat running warmer, make sure the insulated covers I left are on the outside faucets and crack open the attic stair access to keep the attic above freezing. The water heater is in the attic and and there is no insulation in the roof above it and a massive 4’x8’ louvered vent designed to let Summer heat out, not keep Winter heat in. The water heater may just as well be outside for all the protection from the cold it will get.

The house is fully insulated and has a dual heating system, one on each floor. If he keeps the heat set warmer, the system can more than keep up even with the attic access cracked open a few inches.
