The very edge at the pad/deck can be broken with some abrasive/fine files w/o affecting it's effectiveness. My biggest misgiving with the technique is the reality that; no matter the velocity generated, I don't believe the groove can remain free of carbon long enough to be effective for but a small fraction of a decent engine's lifespan,...thus not making it worth the trouble.
