I would think the solution for the heavy stuff (over 30 pounds) would be leave a notice on the mailbox or door to come to the PO to pick it up themselves. The person who sent it did that.

They made us take it out.
Can't tell you how many times I'd get stopped on the route by people asking where their packages were.
