How do you store your "stuff"...

-
I'm pretty frugal (cheap) and if I can find something for free and is really useful, I try to pass it on. My ACE Hardware gets their fasteners - like drywall screws, fence staples, etc. in clear plastic tubs approx 10" X 10" square with nice red lids. They dump their fasteners into revolving bins for sale by the pound and then toss or give away the little tubs. They are free, but I always ask. They always say "help yourself". I do not take all of them, so others can use them too. These little tubs are great for storage in my shed. Ideal for things like orbital sandpaper, PVC fittings, conduit connectors, anything that fits... You can use a heat gun to remove ACEs labels so you can see whats inside or mark with big sharpie.

For small fasteners, I go to Jiffy or Tuffy Lube, etc. and ask for empty plastic bottles the oils & antifreeze come in. They are happy to be rid of them or will direct you to their dumpster outback. I pass them thru a band saw, cutting off the tops, leaving the bottom and about 2-3 inches up the sides, I run these thru the parts washer before putting stuff in them. Antifreese bottoms work well for longer things like chip or acid brushes, tire plugs & tools, tongue depressors used for mixing bondo or epoxy. You can also 'color code' them - red.white for SAE fasteners, blue for metric stuff. The prices is right for all of these and there's always more when you need them or break one.

for freshly blasted intake manifolds I use those giant Zip Loc bags - just the right size and you can get most of the air out

As the Travelling Wilburys sang - "Keep it in a cool, dry place!". You gotta hear this!

I carefully box stuff up, label it, then put it on the shelves in my shop. Then, I put more and more boxes in front of them. Then, when I need it...I forget I ever had it and I buy more of it new. Then, a couple years later I find it and put it back on the shelf until next time.

Well, I got motivated and built some shelving today. One "shelf" without a surface to store wheels up high and out of the way, then two others that I'll get a piece of 1/2" ply cut down the middle tomorrow and plop that up onto. That'll go a long way towards getting crap up off the floor. I'm going to get the bins I bought for this purpose months ago, down from the loft and on the floor, then using them as sorting boxes, one of which will be a "sell this crap" box. Also went and got a couple of those "cases" with sections to put small things in like carb kit items etc.

Thanks for all the ideas. Hopefully soon I'll be able to start working on my vert.

So here is my solution for all the little stuff. A el cheap tool box and then I bent up a bunch of 16 ga alum. Basically just one 90 degree bend to create a foot if you will. A dab of silicone on the bottom so that I can rearrange should need arise. The bench behind one of our more famous FABO members feeding my hound Hemi has large heavy casters mounted on it, so I can roll it out of the way. Really really opens up room as the bench’s simply roll, I do it to most all benches.

I have a big old barn built in the 1930's it has 2 lean too buildings on it, 1 concrete floor & the other is gravel. Gonna get started on it soon. Needs some roof repairs 1st. Then add more lighting, power outlets, ventilation system, air lines ran in the walls with stub outlets every 20 feet, insulated & finished off with 5/8 drywall. Looking at $25,000 to get it to my standards. Tommorrow I'm pulling all my stuff out & making piles, car parts, construction tools & materials & dump run bullshit.

At one point in time I had two 14X30 storage rentals plus my shop.

I'm now down to my shop and this spring I will be selling anything I'm not currently using on my race car project or any Mopar hard parts. I'm 72 and I'm not getting any younger. I don't want my wife to have to deal with all this stuff when I assume room temperature.

I have three friends and my son that have various auto interests and they will help my wife get rid of anything left over from my stash when I go...

I want to make a list of my stuff and put a price next to it so my son will know what to ask for them when I'm gone. I'd hate to see it all go in the scrapper.

Just an update, things slowed way down for various reasons but I'm on the bandwagon again.

lots of awesome ideas in the thread so for that, thanks to everyone. The shelves are up, made a few dump runs, have yet to sort anything. leaking lift cylinder took some of my time, but that was quick. A bunch of other home owner type stuff, plus the crazy weather we all had here in TX threw me off a bit as well.

I'm continuing this thread to have some sort of accountability. Just don't want to talk the talk and not walk the walk and look like an idiot. I need this done and dusted.

Short list of things to do

1. Sort my crap. (parts, fasteners, stuff to sell)
2. Clear out the shed.
3. Clear the floor space.
* Do something with my table saw
* Do something with my dust collector
* Hang tools that can hang on wall space.
4. Dispose of old building materials I'll never use. (Burn wood, dump other stuff)
5. Sort tools, separate things I don't use often from things I use all the time.
6. Store engines (Selling a 6.1L long block, and maybe my early 400 block that was for a stroker that won't get built anytime soon)
7. Store transmissions
6. Start working on the damn Cuda' vert.
* Build the jig
* Mount the car on the jig
* Make it awesome by not *ucking it up.

Update; it's snowing. Now I can't pull my stuff out

Building materials are like gold now. Prices have gone through the roof! I wouldn't get rid of any of it if you can find a place to store it. I do burn some of my materials but not very much, lol.

Yeah I understand. I'm talking about mostly cuttoffs like 1-2 ft 2x4 pieces. I do have a quick project to make though for which some of it will get used but it's mostly trash. I'll probably take the "good" stuff and relocate it since you do make a good point.

Thanks
