Just killing some time looking at stuff, have you looked at Schneider's small block solid offerings lately? I'm pretty sure their entire solid listing descriptions and options have been updated as I don't recall seeing some of them when I was shopping a while ago. It appears to me that they have some eyebrow raising "catalog cams" as well as many other lobes I'm sure not shown on their site. Here's one that caught my eye, don't remember seeing it listed, not that I'd ever need it but I know there are some here that would slobber all over it! :Mopar Perf Mini Express M-316F LA Small Block Solid Lifter Camshaft

It says it is a mushroom lifter cam but the lifter they show for it is a standard lifter. If they have mushroom lifters I will be on the phone Monday ordering 4 sets.

I had a small solid picked out for my 273 but ended up with the Isky E4 because it was a little milder and closer to stock specs. Now I wish I would have pulled the trigger. :BangHead::BangHead:

Pretty sure i threw out my mushrooms when my mini express went flat, but if i didn't...... anybody around who could recondition mushrooms?

Schneider seems to still be successful with their insignia. THERE WILL BE NO MORE DISCUSSION ABOUT IT ON THIS THREAD! Understood?

Mushroom lifter.
Haven't heard that term in years!
They make changing a cam a real pain it the !@#%$#^%@
Unless you have it on a eng stand. Then you can let gravity assist you holding them in place while you remove/install the cam.

No kiddin. That would be some badassary brought back to life, wouldn't it?

Definitely a drag race only can the one mentioned in the first post. not to say you couldn't drive it on the street but you wouldn't like it for very long.. ask me how I know...

Mushroom lifter?

They were a camshaft and lifter design that was the forerunner of the roller camshaft and lifter. Since the lifter face is larger diameter than the lifter body, they have to be installed from the bottom, but before that can happen, the block has to be spot faced at the bottom of each lifter bore, so that the increased diameter "mushroom"part of the lifter can have room to fit. Otherwise, the larger diameter mushroom part of the lifter would hit the bottom of the lifter bores.

Their benefits were very similar to that of roller camshafts. More aggressive lobes, better approach and departure ramps for better valve action. The camshafts increased aggressiveness, required a larger diameter lifter to handle. Larger even than the already over sized Chrysler .903 diameter lifter.

It's really old technology, but one of those cases where it really worked. You can make gobs of power with mushroom stuff. To my knowledge, the longevity issues were never worked out. They were so aggressive, they didn't last long, especially in lower RPM situations. If Schneider is bringing them back, that could be all worked out with modern technology. That would be cool as heck to have a street mushroom grind. LOL

I was just talkin to Rodney and he brought up the fact that I had forgotten. The "Mini Express" was a big block grind. Schneider has a real hard on for small block stuff, so he said evidently they have mapped a mini express and put it on a small block core. Go figure.

I had my maxwedge block lifter bores spot faced for a mini express. Totally unnecessary, the lifter base came nowhere near the bottom of the lifter bore. Could have been just my block, i suppose.

Well somebody done bought that DC mushroom cam kit. Don’t see those often for sure

Great.....so I sell all my sets of mushroom lifters a year or so ago.........yesterday going through the cams on the back shelf I find at least two mushroom lifter cams.......sigh.

Mushroom grinds never went away but became a special order grind.

Ford Y- block engines used mushroom lifters during their run from '54 until '62...
