Hey, someone I know has a 318 from a cop car. They said this 318 was a hot moter in anything they put it in. Said it has more power than the 360s they had been using.
I took pics of the heads, anything special about these? Wasnt able to pull valve covers, didnt know if the letter /number mean anything?
Thanks!

Nothing special just run of the mill smog heads. Pull the valve cover thats where you find your casting numbers. Google search the number. 88’ most likely a 302 closed chamber. Good head for a 318 if not cracked.

Yeah, I wondered if they were really special heads, that's why I went to take pics of them. But the exhaust ports being as small as they are, I kind of figured they were just run of the mill heads. Maybe the cam gave this engine a little boost, who knows!
Thanks!

The 318 cop car motors did, indeed have a lot of added stuff to make it more durable. It was a roller cam block but used a flat tappet cam with 340 specs.the information is on-mopar1.us/sort.html. Let me know if you can't find it.

A friend of mine worked for the Nebraska State Patrol. The first cars that he drove were the Diplomats with the 318-4 barrel motors. He said they were the most gutless things he ever drove!

Cop 318's of that era had garden variety 360 heads, a half-electric Quadrajet, not much compression and the 340 spec cam was long gone. Nothing special about these engines at all. I had an ex-cop 87 Diplomat for a SHORT period of time. Total POS

I have a 87 318 cop. Standard broomstick HFT cam with 345 360 heads. Nothing special. At least it's roller block though. Does have roller timing chain. Does have slightly higher compression height pistons to make up for the 360 head. They claim 9:1 compression, but I think they are optimistic.
