The clearances are very tight under here and the TTI 2 1/2" head pipe I am installing is going to melt that plastic "conduit" the shift cable is wrapped up in. What are you all using to protect a shift cable from melting? Some kind of wrap maybe? I have no experience with wrapping spark plug wires or other cables with high-tech stuff. Thank you.

I have B&M cable shifter in my Dart and used a pre-sewn sleeve that I got from jegs - only problem is you have to have one end without a housing on it so you can feed it through the sleeve

Look for thermal heat sleeve - I like the ones with the reflective silver exterior to reflect some heat away.

Subscribed.

I have this same problem really bad with my '62 Valiant, which I believe actually has a narrower engine bay than your car does, and to make matters worse, I've stabbed an LA engine into it.

My exhaust pipe burned the plastic off my park lock cable the first time I ever drove the car! Did you ever price a new cable, assuming you could find one, which maybe you couldn't?

I've already had to resort to using the T'flite Patty (Pat Blais) trick of enclosing the cable in rubber fuel line and clamping it at both ends. To prevent the fuel line that is enclosing the cable from burning on the exhaust, I've got it wrapped in fiberglass tape. Not only does it look terrible, it still leaks! I can't figure out why it leaks. That is my next repair project.

A fellow FABO member suggested (but I've never tried it), is to use a longer cable, maybe one from a C body, and rather than running it up to the firewall right next to the exhaust, instead run it lower and horizontally toward the front of the engine compartment, and then loop it back to the firewall. That way theoretically you could avoid coming anywhere near the exhaust.

I'm still trying to figure out how to deal with this, and I sure hope somebody has some words of wisdom for us. I may try using a park lock cable from a C body, as I described above.

Are you using the factory clamps that hold cables (and speedometer cable) up against the floorboard? One for the parking brake cable goes on the nut/bolt that secure the accelerator pedal (photo #1). The other I believe has two parts (one for speedo/one for parking brake control cable) (photo #2). Or maybe model year '62 had a different arrangement? Photo #3 is an overview.

"Are you using the factory clamps that hold cables up against the floorboard?"

I can't use the factory clamps because I've got an LA engine and a 727 TF in a '62 Valiant, neither of which the car came with originally. But I am planning to drop the pushbutton mechanism from the dashboard in order to lube and adjust it, and to install a stronger overcenter spring, so when I do I will check out putting thermal heat sleeve on it rather than fiberglass tape. Thanks a lot, dibbons.
