Working on my Demon, about to be ready to drop in engine/trans.
Looking for what spark plugs, oil, and trans fluid to use.
I know this is a lot, but I might as well throw it all in one thread.
‘72 Demon all steel....owned it since I was 15 (1983) glass hood, stock interior.
360, .30 over 4.125 stroke crank (420 cubes)
Eddy heads, Hughes stage 2 porting, super victor gasket matched, 820 Holley.
10.5:1 Comp. Bullet hyd roller cam .249/257 @ .050 .573 lift.
904 trans, rev. valve body, PTC 3800-4000 rpm stall converter.
4.30 gear, 275/60-15 Drag radial.
When I raced the car years ago, it ran 12.20’s with hydraulic cam, and a B&M Super Holeshot converter, and 9x28 slicks.
Technology has come a long way with Cams, converters etc....
That’s why I’m asking you guys here that are “In the know” and up to date with everything.
Mainly what spark plug is good, oil and trans fluid.
Is the synthetic good?
I know this is a bit long, I sure do appreciate the help all!

Wally.

I already know I love that converter.

At that CR on pump gas I’d start with a Champion RC12YC or equivalent and tune from there.

I always run 100% synthetic in everything. What I pay per quart of oil tips some guys over, but I’ve tested enough oil to know it’s not worth screwing around with cheap oil.

Thank you very much for the response!
Yes, I do plan on running pump gas.
I’ve honestly never run a Champion plug, never have heard much good about them, I suppose I’d try any good suggestions?
Are all synthetics alike?
Any preference of one brand?

Lucas hot rod oil 10w40 or Royal Purple racing oil 10w40. The Royal Purple is a lot more expensive.
Tractor Supply hydraulic fluid in the tranny. Cheap, and makes it shift nice and hard. it's clear, so a little harder to read on the dipstick.

Hydraulic fluid??
I’ve honestly never heard that one.
If it’s proven, I may try it.
Car should be ready to fire in about a month.

I run a cheap autolite plug 65, that way I can change them like socks and not care. I run Brad Penn grade 1 5/20w but may move over to vr1 same weight. I run dextron 4, I know everyone runs type F.

I wouldn’t break in that engine with synthetic oil, I would run the Brad Penn break in oil for the first 500 miles. I also run type F trans fluid, although Dex3/4 is also acceptable. I just answered this in another thread somewhere...

I had to have my trans removed by my trans guy due to his employee not using the shaft I provided for the a995 lower gear planetary I gave him to use. When he saw the brand new blue trans fluid I had in there that I paid $6 a quart for, he laughed and poured it down the drain. He put in type F, because at that time it was as close to the Chrysler specific fluid as you could get. There may be better choices now, but not according to Hoxey, who was widely considered the best trans guy in my area.

for plugs I always run the 12 or 14yc champions.

What brand type f and where does he get it. I find it hard to purchase anymore. I used to run champion plugs back in the day but now use either Autolight or NGK's. I haven't used the champs in a while I guess I could try them again. Thanks.

I get mine from Advanced Auto, if only because they have it, and because the counter guy has been there for a couple decades and he is old school.

All good info guys, thank you very much!

Hi again. What brand did they have. And what location as I'm nearby. Thanks.

I’m in Pinckney, and go to the Pinckney store. If Mike is there, ask him to help, if they don’t have it in stock, he’ll get it there by morning.

Yea today I go in and say I need a set of 340 valve cover gaskets, what year, what model, air cond. egr. lol

Yea I met a guy who ran 20w motor oil in his mustang (powerglide). A 8 sec. street car so he must have known something. O yes 1/4 mile.

Champion used to be good plugs. Not now. Offshore manufacturing. I have had a couple failures recently. So unless they are free or very old stock i wont screw em in.

im my opinion, atf is far superior to hydraulic fluid. It was my understanding type f was developed for the clutch lining ford used in the 60’s and 70’s maybe 80’s
And i dont understand why it would make such a difference with current clutch materials.
Type f is still available, so it still has some purpose.

just to throw a monkey wrench in the mix didn't Chrysler at one time put 30 weight oil in the transmission and in the engine?

Type F was Ford's first ATF that was used in the early Ford-o-matics dating back to the early 50's.

All Mopar and GM products spec'd Type A fluid which was superseded by Type B then Dexron in the 70's.

If you used a Type A/ B/Dexron in a Ford transmission the clutches would burn out innjust a few miles without the Type F friction modifier. Happened to me twice when a local shop serviced my '79 T- Bird and '75 F150 transmissions ( FMX).

That’s what it was.
I knew it was something like that. Whatever the stick said, thats what i used. Nothing else.
