I noticed when I removed my MSD ignition that there is a build up of corrosion on the reluctor. The car sat for almost 10 years, and while compression is good and it runs well at about 15 advance, I’m wondering if anybody has seen or experienced this and if so, how to clean it without taking the whole thing apart.

If the dist is out of the car. You could be bit more aggressive with it.

I would first get a toothbrush and some WD 40 or other light oil and see if you can remove the bulk of it.

You could always try mild acid but I would be very carefull with that as who knows what the pickup can handle.

If it is off the car I would do everything with the dist top pointing down to refuse the contamination from getting into the rest of the dist.

all the MSD distributors did this for a long time, in recent years they plated them with something so they don't do it anymore. Give them a call, maybe they'll send you a new reluctor for free, can't hurt to ask...

Good idea. Thanks

Whats it hurting? Probably nothing. Its still ferrous so it will still work. If it works, fix it until it doesn't!

Rust will not affect the operation.
Look on the bright side.....
You didn't have to pay extra for the rust...included in the great [ expensive ] price!

. Yea, if you can’t laugh what’s the point. I was surprised to see corrosion when I removed the distributor but it sat from 1991-2020 due to life. It still works fine.

CLR is your friend there and q tips! It will work fine the only issue would be if the rust flies off and accumulates on the pickup. I see that on cores all the time.

Been running one on my small blocks for over 8 years..has NOT effected performance.
