Adjustable rockers adjusters problem?..

Well crane which is now owned by comp does it not make the 99802 anymore...
So now it is someone with old stock still to get those at a reasonable price or Hughes engines or Smith Brothers...
I've seen websites that say they have them but when you call them they don't...

Just a thought as I have not done it. Could you cut a notch in the threads to create a bur that would cause them to seat tightly after they loosen up?

Don’t forget Manton, but you can forget “reasonable price” with any of them

Crane closed in January.

The original 273 & slant 6 rockers are a friction lock design.
The ones sold by the performance aftermarket are designed to use a lock nut.

The one on the right looks like a Crane 99780.
I don’t know what you ordered, but that’s what it is.
3/8” threads & 3/8” ball.

The 99802 is 3/8” thread & 5/16” ball.
That’s what would have come in the typical Crane iron or gold rocker for a Mopar.

Have you read the rest of the thread?..
I'm pretty sure I covered that already..
The balance here is putting so much money into Factory adjustable rockers you could have just got some good aftermarket stuff...
Now between either buying $120 or $130 banana groove shafts or making my own.. plus near $100 or more for locking adjusters... $100 just to get the set that I have .. and having to grind them for clearancing the springs... And grind the landing pad for the adjuster nut...
After that $320+ and all the time spent how close am I just to buying a set of rockers I can bolt on...

At this point I'm contemplating how much spring pressure the factory non-adjustables will put up with reliably?..
I can't remember the spring off hand here but I remember it being something like 135lb clothes and 340lb open..

Rockers aren’t a place I like to cut corners.

If I need adjustable rockers, about the most “budget oriented” rockers I’ll use for a Mopar these days are the HS made Mancini rockers.
Looks like $449 for the complete SB package.

The last time I bought a set of Crane golds, which was probably like 15 years ago, they were something like $329 or $349, and they didn’t include hold downs.

A few years ago I saw Crane iron BB rockers for something like $500........ without the shafts.
Crazy money.

I’m not a fan of import rockers, so I just stay away from them.

I'm still kicking myself in the butt about the 273 rockers I let go... The held up to my 600 plus lift cam drag racing.. no problem... I've got the carriage way before the horse here.. block is still at the machine shop and I can't afford to get that out let alone a stroker kit...

When it came to having mine done, I had my mind SET on the 273 rockers. I couldn’t get it off my mind, I wanted them and that’s what I got. It was a little expensive to have done, what I had done. $486...But my money went to a one man shop, a good old gentleman, and if my set of rockers was another little boost to keep his shop open for a little while longer, I took comfort in that, and gladly paid for his services.
Hard chromed my banana groove shafts, bushed the rockers, spot faced for the adjuster and cleaned up the pad, shot peened, and threw in billet steel hold downs. 100% made in the USA. :)

The old dude has a name. It's Gary and he's a fine fella for sure.

Are you aware Gary can change those to a 1.6 ratio by manipulating the shaft hole? He can sho nuff do it.

They'll put up with it till they fail.

Those look great! I had to have mine ground in this area to clear the springs...

Yes we talked about that, and also talked about making them all matched 1.5 ratio. But wasn’t worth the expense for what I’m doing. I’m not racing trying to get every last bit out of it. This is a street engine. Gary agreed.

That may be the case with mine as well. I’m not there yet, I’ll cross that bridge when I get to that point.

I also read about using beehive springs to help but maybe that’s a Chevy thing or a bandaid and has its own set of problems when ya use em. I don’t know. When Brian at IMM prepped the Indy/RHS heads, he fitted them with beehive springs and those heads worked damn good.

I just used a rotary tool to smooth out the surface and clearance the spring. I'd then inspect the mating surface with a magnifying glass. I ended up needing more spring clearance than the picture (into the radius of the arm more).

Don’t grind on the rocker to get spring clearance. That is DEAD WRONG. There are a hundred threads about it on here. Unless you are running a 1.550 diameter spring or bigger you don’t grind the rocker. Even then you shouldn’t do it.

If you don’t have spring clearance you need to call Mike at B3 racing engines and have him hook you up with a rocker geometry correction kit.

Never seen one fail. Not to say it couldn't happen.. just like I've never seen a stock cast crank fail but again where there's a will there's a way...

They fail on the pushrod end. The pushrod pokes a hole right through them. I've seen a few.....quite a few if I include what I've seen online. They cannot stand the spring pressure.

Now the old HD Mopar Performance style are thicker. They're a different story....but hard to find.

i knew it was one here somewhere. Thanks. When I get to that point I surely will call Mike.
