Looking to buy a metal detector and real new to this so please excuse my ignorance on the subject. I would like something that would sort out different types of metal somewhat and a price range of under $800 bucks that comes with a sniffer.
Education on the subject is appreciated.

Look up The Hoover Boys on Youtube. They use a variety of different detectors so you can see how they work before you buy.

The find a LOT of cool stuff.

What are you wanting to use it for? Water? Gold? Relics?
Garrett AT Pro is a excellent all around detector.

My first choice would be a White's Metal Detector, but they went out of business. I sold mine that would tell you what it is, gold, etc coin, if it's a 25 cents., 10 cents, etc.

All around mostly but we have lots of old farm equipment buried around here that I would like to not dig up. Thanks Car Nut.

Got it thanks I will check it out TA.

We have a couple of Garrett Ace 250's that we use all the time. Great machine and only around $300. Make sure you get yourself a pinpointer.

Pin pointer I defiantly need.

I have a garrett at pro. The pin pointer is handy but sold separately. Shows depth(relatively), alloy(there is a little read out with coin denominations) is waterproof.

I think books on geology that teach you how to read the land would be way cheaper unless you're beach combing

Searching more for lost treasures but just local fun. Not looking to make money as much as just having fun digging up old rusty things and a few coins and jewelry.
But your right books on geology is what I just started reading learning and finding some interesting things about my area. I have a lot to learn.

I was reading up on this the other day. Guy says to find some place when they are tearing up old sidewalks. With permission of course.

And old homes that are being torn down, again with permission.

Once you learn some of that geology, you'll be eyeballing all kinds of stuff on the ground while flying around. But just digging up stuff is fun too.

So what am I getting in a metal detector if I buy one for $300 or $800?
For that price range, you’ll be getting one that detects all around metals. Perfect for letting you know if it’s junk iron from silver and gold. Good for hunting Meteorites, some of those come up nickel.

Find a shop that sells detectors close by you, so can test drive one. Some are heavy on the wrist, and are not balanced too well.

Good idea if I can find a place that sells them around here I'll do that. Thanks.

Me and my daughter watch the Hoover Boys and they use the AT Pro a lot. I really don't know what the big advantage of the $800 dollar machine would be besides being waterproof. The 250's we have are digital screen and have settings for any kind of metal. We have found things 15inches deep and it will easily pick up a small fragment of a .22 round at that depth. The next one we get will be another 250. My daughter can carry it all day with no complaints.

I agree lite weight and I really don't see me needing a expensive unit for what I'll be doing.

A friend of mine I found out today has a Garrett Ace 400 and said he likes his it's comfortable and pretty light weight.
I ordered one comes with head phones, sniffer and a digger for $387 bucks.
Lots of old farmstead sites around here and know everyone so no problem getting permission to prospect on there land.
I'm excited to start and will jump in my old truck and head down some old dirt roads with a cooler of beer and some snacks.
