Just bought a garage lot of left over parts from a guy getting out of the old car hobby. Have not gone through any of the boxes yet but mainly e and body stuff. Did get a nice 489 center with 3.55 but it is an open. Seems most people want a sure grip but $400.00 for a new one does it add any value? And if you sold one how did you ship it? Fair price for an open 3.55 verse one with a new clutch type installed? Thoughts?

A 3.55 open would have come in a truck or van, the car units for 3.55 and lower gears were all part of an axle package that included a Sure-Grip.

Around here, yours would go for 125 to 150 if the pattern and teeth all look good, spins freely, etc.

For 3.55 complete units in good condition with Sure-Grip, I have bought them from 250 to 350 with the clutch type centers.

It'll fit right in a 5 gallon bucket. Just make a cardboard cover for it and duct tape the piss out of it.

X2 on the 5-gallon bucket. Use a metal one, or if plastic cut a circle of plywood for the bottom so the unit doesn't punch a hole through it. Ask me how I know...

Looks like I would be better off parting it out. Easier to ship and lighter for shipping costs unless I run across an old suregrip.

489 with 3.55 open $400 to $500 here.
With a trac loc $800. With a spin resistant cone type $600 to $750.

Yeah, it's been a while since I've seen any SG advertised for under $500.

...and a 741 with 2.94's might be $125, but 742-489 and lower gears all add incrementally to the asking price.

Try making a posi unit out of a single legger,..You'll have almost $900.00 in it by the time you purchase,
the posi unit, correct case installation kit, and labor at your favorite shop. Around here, its $450 for the clutch pack posi,(Jegs)
another $135 for the install kit (Jegs) and $250 labor at the Ring and Pinion Shop. Plus what you paid for the single legger unit.
New Hi quality units Ive seen, are like $1450.00 now.

300

Adding a sure grip into an existing case is easy. If you have a SG with the side bearings and races, it drops right in. Reset backlash and go.

If it needs new side bearing/races, press them on, install SG, backlash and go.
