Almost ready to start my 360 mag for the first time. Stock hydraulic roller set up new cam.
I have heard 2500 for 20 min for engines with a hyd flat tappet.
I’m unsure about zinc for a roller or the duration and rpm.
I have read that you should break an engine in with petroleum oil and may change to synthetic at a couple thousand miles.
Also I live in Fl and was wanting to know what viscosity of oil to run.
Any brand/viscosity recommendations ?
I have a buddy that has raced for 50 years and his breakin procedure was 20 min @2500
Then take it out for a full blown pass, bring it back and drain the rad and block and let it sit overnight. He got four seasons or more before he freshened it up ?????
Stock 360 passenger pan
Melting hi vol pump
No windsge tray

Did the roller tappets come with any viscosity recommendations? I like VR-1 SAE 30W or Shell Rotella T-1 SAE 30 with Lucas moly break in lube or Rislone along with a WIX or NAPA Gold filter for break in. But what brand of lifters do you have? Some manufacturers are fairly specific on oil viscosity and some don't specify anything at all.

No real need to run that RPM with a roller. As you probably already know, the reasoning for that with flat tappet is to promote lifter ROTATION ASAP. Obviously not needed with roller. Still a good idea to run some RPM to get the oil circulating quickly.

Stock factory lifters. I was hoping that some would say a straight grade oil ,was thinking 30W. I also have used rislone for years. Glad to know Napa gold is a good filter I hadn’t chosen yet.

Amazingly enough, several aftermarket cam companies and the last set of hydraulic roller lifters I held (Morel) recommend breaking in hydraulic rollers cams tappets the same way as a flat tappet cam. One thing is for certain... Extended break in is not going to hurt anything! I recommend changing oil and cutting the filter open within 500 miles.

With any kind of hydraulic lifter, prime the oil system before the first start. With any kind of roller cam, there is no need to do any rpm at break in. Bearing clearance and temp dictates oil viscosity. You do not need to run zinc (or any other additives for that matter) with a roller. I run NAPA 10w40 in my magnum here in So Cal, similar climate I’d imagine.

I always drain my break-in oil after initial start and warm up.
after 500 miles I change it again. I like clean oil.
My dad always told me when I was a teenager " Son, you don't have to change your oil every pay day " it did. lol

No drama with a roller. Crank it up and drive it down the road.

I don't believe any break in is necessary on a hydraulic roller, especially in stockish size.
I've put new lifters in 4 magnum engines & just started the thing & took it for a drive. I have a Rhodes roller in my dakota r/t it acts more like a solid as the piston is a lot stronger to depress & also have higher spring pressure. Revs real nice, hell I've even slacked on oil changes with my 95 ram 1500 5.9 by over 1500 miles & she runs like a top

I use the same 15-40 synthetic I run in my Cummins in my 2 magnums pick ups

Never use a single grade oil. That was obsolete right after WWII.

I ran Kendall 40wt racing oil for years in my 340. 30,000 miles and 30 years and the bearings still looked like I just took them out of the box. I built the motor in 1977 and sold the car in 2008, I went though it a couple years before I sold it. Basically I had to rebuild the clutch and have the flywheel reground so I went through the motor, to my amazement the bearings still looked new, Clevite Micro. I had the motor apart at least 8 times in the 30 years just to look at it. I raced it for about ten years on and off, never easy on it 7600RPM shift points and through the traps at about the same rpm. When changing the oil hot it was still thick, probably took more power to push the thick oil than the thin stuff but I swear by it.

No break in needed for a roller. My last roller motor (small solid roller) I started it up, drove down to the gas station (about 1 mile away) pulling up on second gear to ~ 3500 and letting the engine slow it down to seat the rings....turned around and went back home with the hammer down. Loaded the car on the trailer and went racing the next day.

None of that is wrong. My point is a multi grade oil will do everything a single grade oil will do and some stuff a single grade won’t.

Multi grade oils got a bad reputation before WWII because the Viscosity Index Improvers were questionable. After the war that all changed. Today’s VI improvers are incredible. That’s how you can take a 5 grade base oil and end up with a 5w50 or even a 5w60 and not have an issue.

Back in the early 1980’s Castrol had a 10w50 mineral oil that I used. They eventually got rid of it but that was a good oil and it was way ahead of its time.

I still like running orca-beluga whale oil lol
It’s funny you mentioned whale oil. It was the main source for oil lamps until Rockefeller developed developed kerosene. Actually gasoline was part if his refining process and was dumped in rivers as there was no use for it. Edison trumped everyone with his light bulb.

Very true and few people know that. And at that time gasoline had ZERO value!!!

And whale oil was in ATF until it was banned in the 70's.

That I didn’t know. I wonder how many nations that still whale (China for example) are still using it in ATF??? And who knows what else? I think Russia still does some whaling, but maybe not anymore.

GreenPeace went after Chinese and Japanese whaling ships with a vengeance that led to a ban that they have not really followed.
Search for GreenPeace and whaling

Japan also. Should watch ”Seaspiracy” on NetFlicks
