A really interesting ratchet strap test video

-
California wrote me up several times for having a twist in my load securement straps... bastards!!!

And they were US made not like the cheap *** Chinese junk this guy tested.

I’d still like to see a test involving side loading the straps and trailer hold downs in a X pattern. I’ve always felt that if a strap or hold down failed it would pull your car sideways.

I agree completely and refuse to "x" them. In fact it can allow the entire care to come loose because it affects front/ rear tension.

Really annoys we when I see folks using these to hold down a car....they wrap around the rear and will say it is 2 anchor points....huh?

I was visiting a buddy in AZ a while back. I had just dropped my Dart off so my trailer as still hooked to my truck. "Hey Doug....Mind if I borrow your truck & trailer?". He loaded a car up, threw it in Park and hopped in my truck....his reasoning was he was only going on surface streets so the speed was low....thing is he always goes 20 over the limit....While he proceeded to argue with me I just threw my straps on...Guy has a death wish...

I have always questioned the x-thing. I met the guys from Mac Tie Downs at a show once. They explained the theory behind it....to each his own.

im also not a fan of the x system

i feel like keeping each strap as short as possible is a better idea, and i put each strap on like i expect that one strap to secure the load if all other straps fail

That was a good test with the knot. Knot weakens the strap by 50%.

Won't be using any knotted straps. Usually have safety chains front and rear when strapping a car down in case the straps would break or get cut over a sharp edge.

Had a set of cheap yellow ones break on me before. Super cold day, trailer had ice on it. The car was a manual shift and low compression. No emergency brake. Its not fun to see you car sitting in the street after it slid off the trailer.

All straps get a twist on each side and the top. Everything that gets chained down gets an extra X. Never stopped or cited for twisting straps or securement.
