See I won't run Fram in anything I care for personally. I run either Wix on Napa Gold (made by wix) filters
This was in the 60's...NAPA Gold wasn't even on the horizon. We mostly saw oil company private label filters plus the few auto parts stores we had were trade-only outfits. Back then if you were not in the auto repair biz they would not sell to you!

Yes we had Midwest Auto, a local outfit called Wizzy's and one or two others but generally speaking you bought your speed parts via mail order or a local speed shop and your repair parts came from one of a few retail parts sellers...it was a different time!

Our local hardware store would not sell you a faucet gasket for your home unless you had a plumbers license...

Castrol pissed me off when they won the lawsuit so they could claim their dino oil was actually synthetic! Never been a fan but still...
 
Are there any downside to running Rotella 15w40 in my 408 magnum?

Remember too, if you're thinking about it for ZDDP content, that's been dropped a good bit since converters were mandated on diesels. So, you're really not getting any advantage there.

i stopped using castrated oil back in the 90's
 
I wrote Bob the oil guy who wrote the paper on oil for flat tappet engines. I asked about using Royal Purple Duralec Ultra. It has the correct amount of zinc and additives and is certified for gas and diesel. He said that it would be good to run in my RB. Too much zinc is not beneficial.

Literally that is liquid plastic. I can’t believe they still make that stuff. Adding that to any engine oil alters all the work the Tribologist did to formulate the oil. If the oil isn’t good enough, buy a better oil.

I been lucky I guess it has been in my junk for years
 
It has a bad rap because most didn't even think of using it until it smoked blue ... as in "that motor is shot".


Actually it has a bad reputation because as I said, it is literally liquid plastic in a can. Using it changed the formulation of the oil by a wide margin.

I pay for a quality oil, not something I have to add a supplement to, not knowing what it does to the host oil without testing it.

In that case, you SURE wouldn't like the concoction I've got in my 440 at the moment, LOL.

Well, I'm old and cheap. I was gifted two cases of excellent old (loaded with zinc) racing oil, some vr1, some pennzoil. Problem is, its mostly straight 50 wt. I'm still gonna figure out a way to use it.
And since ive got two diesel trucks, i buy diesel oil everytime its on sale, 25 qts to do oil change on both. So, ive got LOTS of diesel laying around.
So, breaking in a fresh 440 with a .557 purple shaft, ive got five qts diesel, two and a half qts 50wt vr1, and a bottle of lucas breakin.
No problems with breakin, great oil pressure, (no surprise there, lol), and ran elevens for a couple passes before i pulled the breakin oil out.
Thought i had about 80 qts of oil in stock till i started to clean out and organize the garage. Turns out i had 180.

That Pennzoil is, as you said, loaded with anti-wear additives. It should work fine. Just don't leave it in your engine for an extended time because the additive can become corrosive after a while. It was intended to be effective in supercharged engines running alcohol and nitro. Meant to be run and dumped, corrosion from the high levels of ZDDP wasn't a concern.
I don't know anything specific about the other oils.
 
in the 60's and 70's my dad and uncle would build their race engines with a quart of 30 wt, a jug of STP and wheel bearing grease.
They never flattened a lobe or lost a bearing.
Come to think of it, neither have I. lol
