1970 DODGE 340 SIX PACK vs THE WORLD Richard Holdener

-

Nice video. Don't like the massive bog when the outboard carbs opened though. If it bogs on the dyno just think how it would bog in the car. Assuming Nick was told to not tune the carbs but just run them as is.

Ya. he didn't want to do many runs or touch it much without the owner there, not bad 326 hp without being dialed in.

Richard Holdener almost always runs headers and electric water pump even with less cr and mild cam his did 370? hp, possible Nicks with tune, electric water pump and headers would of come close to Richards numbers. Don't know if cr mattered much since blueprinted 9.5:1 vs stock un blueprinted 10.5:1 would probably be similar, Guess depends on the Ford and Chev one's he's comparing to if they were blueprinted to stock cr.

i've seen stock build 340 six pacs pull 390 hp no problem on the dyno . they were underrated like most dodge engines

Would be interesting to see what that engine would produce in the car with some tweaking including the distributor curve & carb jetting. I know the owner wanted a "stock" rebuild, but head porting is still leaving everything else stock but improving the flow. That alone should help the numbers some!

Hey. I have one of those too.

headers added 50HP easily. Wonder what the B351C did through its manifolds?

That bog is the water brake kicking in....puts a big load on the engine. Thats how a dyno works. You will notice Nick pushes the throttle fully open then the engne takes a bit to recover...

So it bogs a little? How many people still run a 6 Pack? The Hey Honey look it's a 6 Pack at the Car shows is worth it.

None of the Chrysler factory 340s were at advertised spec either, so they are closer than they think probably.

I find that hard to believe
I will buy 320 hp for a 68-71 340 but don’t buy an additional 70 hp with tri power, the 440 six pack only added 15 hp over 4 barrel . Even an early 383 rated at 335 hp only gained 8 hp with
2 four barrels

On paper.

Do you have a better source?
Mopar lying about hp ratings has spawned many a fish story

Yes. My experience. If you think for one second that "all" adding a WHOLE nuther four barrel carburetor adds is 8 extry HP, you're wrong. You can get that just spinnin the single four motor up a little more.

obviously you've never ridden in a 340 6 pack there is no bog it's like hitting the nitrous switch when the outboards kick in there's really nothing like it for stock induction. And also the boss 351 has a considerably larger solid lift camshaft than the 340 if you were to put a comparable cam in the 340 it probably would have beat it both in torque and horsepower

Very likely......until about 6000. lol

My 70 Charger ran 12.30s@ 111 with a 440-6 . Mild port and .550 roller ....
Car weighed 3950 and had 3.55s
6-pacs work !

It was fun building one of those 340 Six Packs once.
Here....this one made 413 lb-ft & 421 hp. Stock stroke and .030" overbore. I cannot find the cam card but I remember it was a custom solid flat tappet, 106 LSA on 103 ICL. Probably around .500" lift. 9.37:1 compression ratio. Factory iron heads 261 cfm @ .500" lift.
