Yet another “fender tag” thread from a new guy, I have done most of it my self but would like a little guidance. It’s a 1966 valiant singet
SO number
12800390(this is a point of confusion for me, just not sure how to read it properly)
Bdy
VH23(valiant, whew that was hard)
Trm
H5H (I know it’s a singet so I am guessing that is what this means)
Paint
AA1 p (silver with red interior…. Boy I’m a regular rocket surgeon)

This is where the questions start
Dose the so number brake down like this?
1/28 (month and day it was made)
00390(meaning there were 389 made before it).

next the paint AA1, I found out this was silver, and I’m struggling with that, I have been thinking about body color since I picked it up and I am just not a silver fan. But if it’s not a highly picked color I might consider keeping it that color. I wasn’t around in the 60’s but it doesn’t seem like a popular choice and I was thinking about repainting it kk1 or cc1.

I have the original Chrysler certicard to go with it and I know it was sold on 1-3-67

Post picture of tag.

silver with red interior is a desirable combination. Certainly lesser seen combination. Silver is usually an extra cost color depending on year.

Silver with red would look really good, IMO.

Metallic silver, by the way, and it was extra cost in 66 and 67, I believe for everything Mopar but certainly for A and B bodies. So yeah, a desirable color and undoubtedly less common in Valiants than more expensive models.

Do you know if I’m correct in the way I’m reading the SO number ?

seems like it. Its listed in some decoders as the “build date” But it is technically the SPD Scheduled Production Date (not actual build date).

(Edit from clarification of op)

In this case, the SPD is 25 days after Certifcard sold date.

I don’t know what’s going on there, but if the Certifcard date represents the vehicle at the dealer, it shows that SPD dates cannot be assumed as actual build dates.

Sorry it’s listed as a 66, and didn’t sell until 67 from what I’m seeing

Wow! That’s a long time.
Right! I’m wondering if it was the color combo for the time tied in with the options
Heat, but no ac
Higher end trim car but it’s a Plymouth
Drums all the way around
No power brakes
Power steering
3 speed auto
170 engine

11 = engine = 170 1 bbl
5 = trans = automatic
R-1 = am radio
z-8 = buffed paint (silver)

b-4 = 564 = bucket seats

Just been looking at your fender tag and checking my little white books. Noticed that the "8" under the letter "Z" stand for "buffed paint," and is limited to "AA1 only." I'd guess that the metallic silver paint being buffed is one (or maybe the only) reason that it was an extra cost option.

Looks like the "4" under the top "b" means bucket seats.

Valiant Signet, buffed silver metallic exterior with red bucket seat interior, 170 slant six with Torqueflite automatic trans, AM radio.

Kind of a strange combination - top of the line model, extra cost paint, red bucket seat interior, but with the smallest and least powerful motor available.

May be why it sat on the lot for almost a year.
Now I’m struggling with paint, if silver is that odd of an option I’m tempted to leave it, it’s just my one of least favorite colors

TRM H5H is describing the interior seats: Material, style, color.

the P after. The AA1 is the upper door frame/ interior paint code.

Not unheard of. My '68 GTS convertible (red/black bucket interior/no console/340/column auto) has an SPD of 8/28/67 and, according to the owner's manual a first sale date of May 14, 1969. I've also been looking at new Durangos lately. There are three brand new 2019's listed on Autotrader right now. The mileage written down on the owner's manual in the second pic was from February 1970. Either it had some miles when first sold or Robert drove it a ton in 9 months.

Since I only have one eye, I roll it twice as fast as two so it's too late. I already rolled it.

I can't remember ever seeing a silver / red combination. I think it would pop.

I'm partial to AA1 myself :)

Way back I had a 68 GTX silver with red/maroon interior, extremely pretty and seldom seen. A PO had even dropped in MX top to go with the 440.

If the engineers knew what I know about buffing metallic paint, they would have clear coated it. I wonder how much the extra cost was?

Damn, your Barracuda looks great!

I don't think I've ever seen an early Barracuda or Valiant in silver with a red interior. That combination was fairly common for 66 Chargers, though. I've seen several of them. Plus that combo was in all the Charger brochures.

Found this one online:

Thanks! It's a great 10 footer. Paint was done in 1981 by the PO. Always garaged but driven a lot. The story I got was the 65 stripe was put on when new. So when he painted it, he put the 65 stripe back on.
