The "Throw Away 318"
"yeah... "was"...
on another note, I'm working on an 85 D150 (D100? emblems gone) with a leaning tower of power. Runs + drives as is. but I want "more power"
in past years, I'd have been quick to yank the running /6 and drop in a 318.... been there done that. I even know where there's currently a 440 that I could easily get my hands on and drop that in. but (OK, I know I'm gonna get hammered for this) I also had another /6 basketcase sitting here, I decided to build that engine up as my "power adder". basic rebuild, lots milled from head and block, to get barely over "advertised" CR from back in the day, much better than where I actually started out at) bored, reground cam (in '80s lingo, it's now a good "RV" type cam) oversize valves, polished and ported, converted to a Super 6.... I don't want much from it, but would be happy with "power of the day" between what a stock 318 and what a stock 360 "would have had" from the factory in the 80s when this truck was new.
I wish people would quit bashing 318s.
as far as 340s and 360s being "a dime a dozen" they never have been around here. I have never had my hands on a 340, couldn't even find one of those in my HS days of the 80s around here let alone now, so that particular engine is beyond consideration. I have a couple of 318 and 360 Mag blocks here, could have used those. But then I'd need a V8 trans, V8 radiator, V8 motor mount brackets, V8 front-engine accessories, etc. so by staying with a /6 I don't need any of that.... thoughts were that I could put "more" (forget about what things cost today vs the 80s haha) into building a better /6..... Im kinda anxious to see how that works out "for myself" as opposed to what's online.... cuz as we all know "if it's online it MUST be right" HAHAHAA we all know THAT's a crock of BS.....
and being in my 50s instead of late teens/20s like then might be having something to do with that..... maybe not. The /6 that I started with was basically a "throw a way".... I wanted it for the super 6 that it came with, that was gonna go on my kid's /6..... I since found a 2nd super 6 setup, so I have enough to go around, for both his and mine.
so I found the parts I was lacking for my basket case (CHEAP!) to make it a complete engine, here people hammer others for running a 318 and I'm running an even less desireable engine in my truck.... at least for now. if all else fails it may wind up in my Volare, which also was originally a /6 that I yanked years ago and gave away in hopes of putting a complete early 90s Dakota 318 drivetrain into......
in the same way as a 318 is internal balance while a 360 (stock anyway) is external meaning there are "conversion parts" needed to swap between them that aren't needed if you keep the 318..... and you can spend that money saved on a 360 pan, 360 mounts (OK 1 side) 360 converter or flywheel, etc making that 318 better.....
