Timing Chain Set

-
Well maybe you just found two crap *** timing sets. There's plenty out there. Here's a tip. Unless you pay "around" or over 100 bucks, you're not gettin a good one. If stable and accurate timing is important to you, the 40 dollar timing set ain't gonna get it done.
I gotta crap one too! If you remember my keyway was cut wrong it was like 20 degrees retarded dot to dot!

Scody 21,
A B**** is uncalled for, but so easy to do behind a computer 3000 miles away.

Was not aimed at you Tims66. YR told me that in person last week. I’m dealing with the same problem as you are... it sucks we spend so much money building our motors for longevity and power to have a key part **** the bed with to little run Tim..

Thanks for the reply. Its frustrating to try to figure out, but I,ll get there. I,m finding out that alot of todays parts are throw away and not of good quality.

Tim

I do remember that! Buying the best doesn't always guarantee success, either. The RollMaster set I bought for the slant 6 had a mis-marked lower sprocket AND it seized on the crankshaft and I had to cut it off with my air chisel. That set cost 120 bucks.

I guess we may have to start keeping the old gears and getting new chains? or installing gear drives? I truly believe its the powers that be's way of phasing out old cars while still making a buck off of all us old car guys. Squeeze every last drop out of the grape...OR we can retrofit new drivetrains into the old bodies eh?

Tim.....somebody above suggested an Edelbrock set, and I will throw an AMEN to that comment. I've used several of their double roller sets, and they are snug at installation. I had a fuel pump quit on one of the motors, and checked the tension while I had the pump out. It was still tight at 6K miles. I have one ordered for my 273 build, so I hope it's the same experience as before....and I haven't sat here and typed a fib!

Looking at that and may just have run a tensioner. Ive put chain sets in Mopar, Ford and chevy and never had this kind of problem.

Thanks, Tim

I taked to tech at Hughes and ordered their set from Pro Gear. Purchased the tensioner as well. I,m Over this stuff we will see how it goes.

Thanks, Tim

I have a Pro Gear set here for my big block stroker build. The block has billet main caps installed so I hope it’s not loose. Kim

i ca't beleve this is even a topic these days . Back in the day you bought a chain whatever brand and it worked . has quality control gotten that bad ? I n 40 years i can't remember ever buying a new chain that was loose

Yes, it’s that bad.

OF you could look at it another way. For and GM had chain slop problems too.....but never addressed it during the same years Chrysler did. A loose aftermarket chain is certainly not the automaker's fault.

Parts store chain sets have always been crappy. Maybe not as bad as now, but crappy. I've seen guys put single row, nylon cam gear sets on an otherwise HP build with decent compression, a lumpy cam and all the other bolt ons. ......and "thought" it ran good.

I’m not sure who makes this for Summit but we bought another one (the first one I bought 4 yrs ago is on my 410 stroker and there was/are no issues) for a 360 we are building and the cam gear is a loose fit on the many cams (so not a cam issue) we tried it on so back it went. Trick Flow !!!
I bought one for a big block RB and directions had Trick flow on them.

That nasty word [ China ] changed it all !!
We better hope they dont get into the condom market !!!!

Update on the timing chain issue. I purchased a set thru Hughes from Pro Gear. Installed as it should and didnt require a tensioner. Rusty Rat Rod was right, pay a little more to get quality parts. Still a shame how bad old companies parts have become.

Thanks to all, Tim

Hell yeah. Glad you got it figured out.....although at the expense of your pocketbook.
