Electric guitar...

BTW- that I, IV, V pattern mentioned above (for the OP, that's basically "Louie, Louie" or "Wild Thing") can also be done with all "Black Sabbath" chords and it's way easier and faster to play that way to work on timing and palm muting, although it doesn't ring out the same as the open, full chords.

Some songs call for it one way, some the other.

I'd suggest practicing both ways and seeing if you can seamlessly switch between the two while staying in time. That's a great exercise that's not too terribly difficult that builds reps in several areas.

Learning to play guitar today is much easier then it used to be!
I never took lessons.
Had records and cassettes and had to listen over and over and learn how to tune and play by ear.
Now there is youtube!
You can search anything and watch videos .
The main thing I tell beginners is you have to play!
It takes many hours and consistent practice every day.
It will come !
Be patient , don't try to play fast .
Work on getting your fingers acquainted with the fretboard.

The guitar got to the local UPS this morning at 4:00 in the morning according to the tracking number...
The hub is closed today and obviously tomorrow and The observed Monday...
I won't get it till Tuesday...:BangHead:...

My uncle, who despite sharing the passion only ended up giving me advice and about 10 "hours" of "lessons" in about 10 years used to say "fist comes right, then comes fast".

He also said Metallica sounded like Black Sabbath played on "45", and to a certain extent was right.

Get yourself some Pantera & black label society CDs? & see if you can copy the shredding

Unfortunately an instrument does not make you a musician any more than a tool box full of tools makes you a mechanic. Some got it, some never will...

I'm sure if you read the beginning of the thread you'd see my view on this is in the realistic realm...

When you get hooked you may get GAS, gear acquisition syndrome, it's just like collecting Mopar and parts, you buy one guitar, then you want another, one amp, then another, one pedal, then another. I gave it up for awhile, then the bug hit me again last summer when the covid hit, since last summer this is what I've already bought back.

Oh yeah, that sounds like me... LOL..

A fantastic first song to learn is House Of the Rising Sun by The Animals. It's a very simple chord progression and a great exercise as well. Plus, it'll really pump you up learning something cool and familiar. I highly recommend it.

Hopefully it will be here when I get home from work tomorrow.....

"House of the rising sun" .
The reason I bought my first guitar in 67. Easy to learn, it was the rest that were hard...
Eric Burdon is 80 years old now...Birthday in May.
Mopars were/are easier to work on than playing guitar.

Thank you for the encouragement?..

I get the feeling that people think that I think because I can work on a car I'll be able to play a guitar....
It seems like people are jumping into this thread and not reading post number one..

I understand that the best equipment should yield the best results...
Not really... there is so much good, inexpensive equipment out there today you can rock the house with a $49.00 guitar with a good setup.

I can ruin Smoke on the Water with a $200,000 Eric Clapton owned Strat...

Everyone knows that smoke on the water is the guitar anthem !

I ordered the stupid thing Sunday before last and it says be here Wednesday.. then Friday.. it gets here in Portland Saturday at 4:00 in the morning and cannot be delivered till today. I look at the tracking now and it says "on its way.." NOT out for delivery...:BangHead:...
The place that has it doesn't open till 10:30..!!!?? 10:30!.. who the hell opens at 10:30.. banks have been open for an hour and a half!.. damn it!...
Freaking me UPS!!...:bs_flag:

Okay finally it says it's out for delivery! Yay! Now if the crackheads don't steal it off my porch before I get home from work! LOL...

So it came... I opened the box and I knew something was going to be damaged...
There was NO padding on top of the guitar??.. The pick up switch and volume nobs were smashed in...:BangHead:..
I LOST IT!!...:realcrazy:....
I went shopping...
I went to the music store and bought a cheap Axe... Amp, tuner, cord, shoulder strap, and picks ..
