Changed out the filler neck gasket today

67dart, 319,000 miles, original gas tank.

Had a hope that I wouldn't have to remove the tank, in the imortal words of Maxwell Smart missed it by that much, about 3/4 of an inch!

1. Drained the fuel from the tank
2. Removed the vent tube
3. Unscrewed the trunk floor grommet.
4. Unscrewed the filler neck from the quarter
5. Disconnected the sender wire
6. Disconnected the fuel line to the sender
7. Disconnected the ground strap at the sender
8. Supported the tank with a jack
9. Removed the tank strap
10. Lowered the tank enough to move the tank to the passangers side
11. Removed the filler neck
12. Lowered the tank to the floor
13. Removed the OEM gasket
14. Put a bit of vasoline around the tank hole
15. Installed the grommet
16. Raised the tank back up into position
17. Put the filler tube back into position
18. Put some vasoline on the tube
19. Slipped the tube into the tank
20. Raised the tank into final position
21. Positioned the strap
22. Inserted some tarpaper like material between tank strap and tank
23. Tightened the strap bolt
24. Positioned the filler neck with new gasket to body
25. Tightened screws
26. Reinstall trunk floor seal

Well that's how it was supposed to go....


I shined a flash light into the tank and finally found the plastic from some duct tape from about 2 to 3 years ago. ( Long story, bottom line, don't tape things to wooden dowels with duct tape)






Since I did not think I had to remove the tank I left the 1/2 tank of fuel in the tank.
Had to syphon it out after I had the tank out and on the floor. (About 7 gallons with about 1 to 2 left in the tank)

The new seal vs OEM seal
OEM seal measured about 2" id, the new seal measured about 1.9" id
Probably from old age?

The OEM seal was soft and supple
They don't make materials like they used to.



After everything was all back together I filled it up to the gills, so far so good.
