I bought a new emblem to replace one on my car that was broken thinking it was double sided tape. Turns out it has studs with locking nuts on the back.

What’s the easiest way to get back behind there? Opening the door doesn’t give me enough space to squeeze in there.

Some of those emblems used an insert that went into the hole and would lock the emblem in place. Depending on year, some were metal, some plastic. They can inserted from the outside, so, no need to get on the back side of the fender.

Barrel Nut... plastic or metal, measure your emblem stud and fender hole and order accordingly.

If there are nuts on the back side now, you'll probably need to remove the inner fender splash shield so you can get your hand in there to remove them.

If you open The door some....from the inside of the car side ...I was able to barely squeeze my hand in there on my 68 valiant for the v eight emblem. Try that.

It has nuts on the inside and the new ones also install the same way. I tried squeezing my hand/arm through the inside part of the door but there’s not enough room.

How does the inner splash shield come out? In the wheel wheel I see several clips/screws. I only want to remove what is necessary.

They should be screws with big washers. My 70 shield was metal, not sure when they switched to plastic. But all of them will need removed and the shield removed.

Do yourself a favor and remove the wheel, then the splash shield. It will make the job very easy. Be sure to support the emblem when tightening the new nut on so you dont break the new emblem.
BTW, wasnt the emblems on the quarter panel in 71?

All done. A total of six bolts had to come out for access to the emblem. Still tight in the area but all I did was turn the wheel and not take it off to work in there while my daughter held a flashlight for me.
Thanks everyone.
