I don't know much about "real" mills except they are nicknamed "Bridgeport" for a reason.................

You can whittle some fun stuff out on one. You just need a chunk of metal. LOL This is a head for a John Deere diesel to turn it into a alcohol burner. It's for a tractor puller. Radar did experimental work for Chrysler back in the day, was onboard with the B1 head program, did head repairs for John Force, and modified heads for S&S motorcycle engines.

Probably a good deal! Imagine what you can do to those cylinder heads with that in your life!!!!!!

Talking if to him I should have almost everything I need to make it run with the stuff he’s including. He sounds like if I got an open trailer we could break it down into a few pieces and use my engine crane to reassemble.

Honestly rent a fork truck and move it in one piece. If I were closer I’d haul it for you with my truck trailer and fork lift. Way safer than an engine crane. Those things are heavy and like to pull stuff over with out counterweight.
Jist my opinion. Be safe but grab that baby.

I just gave $3500 for a Bridgeport Series One vertical mill set up for 120 VAC single phase. $2000 is a steal. I haven't picked it up yet but the machinist I'm buying it from said the only intelligent way to move it is to loosen the head and rotate it 180 degrees so the motor is facing down. He said it'll be less top heavy that way.

buddy bought one and po loaded it with forklift. got to buddys house and cherry picker would not even begin to unload it. neighbor 1/4 mile away had fork lift and unloaded it with out a problem. leave it in 1 pc if you can.

My driveway scares me probably more than anything. I’ll try to post some pictures tomorrow of what I’m faced with. He has 8 foot ceilings too so that’s what I have. I think I’m going to get the serial numbers tomorrow and he said that will give me the specs. I’m assuming this is a series one?

I think that's a J head.

Turn the head upside down (4 horizontal bolts facing the front).

Pull the four vertical bolts that lock the head rotation (horizontal plane) to the base and the head will come off with a cherry picker and a sling up where the head meets the top body. Then the base ain't bad to move. I've moved em with a cherry picker, a two wheeler, and a skinny friend.

Well being sick and this one being 2.5 hours from me I may be passing on it. Found this one (way smaller) for 1000.00 five miles from home.

One thing I found when I was looking at vertical mills is that many of the smaller mills do not have power down feed (which is probably not a drawback if you aren't planning on boring something) and they don't have a power table feed. I'd check if that Enco has either and if it doesn't, and that's not a big deal, $1000 is a good price.

My buddy has a Bridgeport like the one above. His table feed actually consists of a Mopar wiper motor and works great. I’m not a fast worker and have lots of free time so speed isn’t a big issue for me. Mainly looking for something to fab parts and take some of the manual labor out of it. Probably really need a mill like this and my buddies head machine then I would be set. This thing has a floating table that makes head work a breeze.

The round column mills shown in post #16 are POS compared to that Bridgeport. Not enough room under the head to do much once you have a vise mounted and tooling in the spindle. They also lose tram when the head is raised or lowered and you have to recenter over the hole you were working. Big PITA. I would strongly suggest going after the BP. $2k is a good price if it isn't totally clapped out and the step heads are more trouble free than the vari-speed heads. Comes with a VFD too which is hard to beat.

Can't really argue with any of that. The round columns can be a pain if you move it. But for light work, they're "OK". Somewhere between a knee mill and a drill press really. Given the choice and assuming the room is available, the floor models are a better choice.

Moving a big mill has been and always will be an issue for me and my shop limitations and my physical condition. Low ceilings, limited space, hilly driveway, and tight to get into to unload as my driveway is gravel. And again my son at this time has zero interest in helping or using our shop even though he lives here.

Did you buy the mill?
Is he listing if for public sale if you did not buy it?

not sure. He lives in West Virginia and I can ask him. My mind right now is 80/20 against buying it at this time. To sick to do it now anyway and he’s giving me time.

Just curious. I'm looking for one. West Virginia. That's a long drive. Just went to Carlisle. If he decides in the future, I'd be interested. Hope you purchase it though if you need it.
