getting ready to paint my 68 GTS, I 've jammed everything so all I have to do is paint and clear the body, question is how much base and clear will I need, I was thinking a gallon of each should do it.

What color is it and is the car sealed? And whats the mixing ratio on the basecoat?

Base / clear paintjob, the protection is in the clear. If your going to wet sand and buff, your going to want to use more coats of clear. Your only going to need enough base to put an even color on it. I'd get a gallon and a half of the base, 2 gallons of clear, since some of it will get wet sanded off. Garage jobs sometimes get dry line in em, or dirt, and need wet sanding to get rid of it.

Should be enough with a little left for touch up.

it is sealed with epoxy primer ratio is 2:1 color is Medium dark turquoise

Better scuff that epoxy primer completely dull and leave no shiny spots in it, or the paint will not adhere and will peel off. I believe 320 grit will do it.

No need to scuff epoxy if you are within the recoat window.

A good painter would use 2 quarts of base, just enough to cover.
The depth and longevity comes from the clear, a gallon to work with.

2 gallons basecoat. Mix them together so they both match.

Want to have at least 2 quarts left over in case something happens to the car and you need to repaint the whole front or a complete side.

You want the color to match especially if it is a metallic. Nothing worse than a door repaint from a keyed scratch and it is the wrong color, sticking out like a sore thumb.

Good Luck on your paint job.

It only took one gallon of single stage for my buddy to paint my fastback, it lasted for 15 years. lol
I've seen him use less on trucks than what some of you are suggesting.

Good Luck on your paint job.
This is same paint I got for my car. GREAT product!

Omni base coat / clear coat is what I painted my 66’ Barracuda with.
I used about 2+ quarts of silver and a gallon of clear. And a tad under a pint of base red for the stripe.

That was product not including activator or reducers.

Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it while in the middle of a paint job.

A question I don't see being asked (unless it's in another thread and/or I don't understand what "jammed" means) but is this for just painting just the outside body or completely (engine bay, under hood/trunk, door jambs, etc.) doing everything? The amount of paint and clear is vastly different depending on what you are doing.

Hi bro, why didn't you want to give the car to the service so that it could be painted qualitatively and well? Personally, it is very important for me that the work is well done, but if I do not understand something, I do not do it myself, even with the help of the Internet, since there are not always good advice and hints here. When I had to paint the car, I gave it to the service https://www.oahuinteriorpainting.com/, where my friend works. He is a reliable person and his team is good, so I had no doubt that they would do their job well. Perhaps you should give your car to the service in order not to make mistakes when painting, if you are going to paint it yourself.

I agree with having a couple qts. left, for just in case stuff. So 1 1/2 gal base or single stage. The color and brand and color of primer/sealer has a bearing.
Usually takes me 1 gal. single stage to do a complete car (not bottom side though). 3 coats. Type gun and etc makes a difference. I have done some with 3 qts.
I used 2 qts clear on outside last time for 3 coats. I will not sand that. single stage only for topcoat, it took 1 gal.nothing hardly at all left over. ,,, on eng. compartment, jambs, underside of hood, trunk lid, the B body trunk was in spatter paint.
Heck, I see some guys doing 6-7 oats of clear! Really!????

..to be clear what would be the total required in single stage for a complete repaint on his GTS
including trunk, engine bay and door jambs? ...like the factory did.
