There is a wiring difference too. The single speed motor only has 2 wires going to it. The variable speed one has 4. Not sure if the main harness has the extra ones or whether they're on a separate harness. If you find a donor car the same year, you may want to compare it with yours.

I found this picture of a variable switch, which indicates which color wire went where but not what device the wire controls. Perhaps I can find a wiring diagram. Also both cars are from different country of manufacturing USA and Canada not sure if wire color is the same judging from the connection to main terminal in engine bay colors there are different
