On October 5, 1916, the Henry Ford Trade School opened. The school was the brainchild of Henry Ford and trained teen-aged boys in the skilled trades, including machining, metallurgy, drafting, and engine design.
The boys learned by doing, creating useful components for local factories in hands-on lab and shop classes. In addition to the manual training received, academic classes were required. (Source and image:
