Gear swaps between cases

Hopefully this is a quick question with an easy answer. I talked to a couple drivetrain shops including six states distributors and no one could give me a for sure answer. I have a 489 case center section with a 3.23 sure grip but want to change the gears to something a little steeper. So I also have a 741 open center section with 3.55’s. Can I pull the 3.55’s ring gear out of the 741 and put it in the 489 center section to replace the 3.23’s? Also to add to the dilemma if it is, the 489 is a big pinion and the 741 is a small pinion. Thanks in advance for the information.
