I am replacing the suspension completely my question is should I have loosened the pitman arm nut on the steering box before disconnecting it from the cross bar

Are you replacing the pitman arm? If so and you plan to pull it any way it’s doable that way but if it were me I’d leave it and pull it last. You’ll need a pitman arm puller to get it off the box. If you don’t need to replace it I’d leave it in place.

I am replacing the pitman arm and I have a puller I was just wondering if I should of loosen the nut on the pitman arm before pulling the centerlink off

Yes. You can loosen the steering box nut or remove alltogether. The pitman arm won't fall off easily if the nut is off the steering box. The old pitman arm can also remain attached to the old center link since your scrapping both. Keep pitman arm on steering box until last, you may need the Centerlink stable and not flopping around if you need to use a pickle fork to detach the ball joints.
Take a pic 1st and mark the orientation of the Pitman arm on the splined shaft before using the puller. Makes it easier to orient the replacement arm in the correct spline.

If you're using an impact gun, it will make no difference. If you're going to muscle it loose with a breaker bar, I'd do it with the steering box attached to the car. It won't matter if the center link is attached to the pitman arm or not, you're going to turn the box all the way to the lock anyway.
