Also, he refused to fly because of being claustrophobic. He had a meltdown the last time he ever flew.
Started travelling by train and then by motorhome (the "Madden Cruiser") which I'd rather do myself - much better way to see the country. The first 'bus' the network rented for him was Dolly Parton's tour bus.
