My Super Six I built for my duster was with the stock SS 2bbl inake and manifold with a Holley 500 2bbl chokeless carb. And it sounded great. Like you, a v8 start and idle. And at cruise more of a V6 sound. Not too throaty, but enough to let the car next to you know you were there.
My buddy had the Clifford system you spoke of on his CJ5, Only he ran the webber 32/36 (I think) carb and the single tube header. That was a clean sounding setup.
