Yosemite Fire (Washburn Fire)

I’ve been off FABO for a few days. Reception sucks, no downtime anyway. Today I am able to find a little lonely bar of signal on my phone to boom this dispatch out to you guys.
My strike team of engines are working in the Mariposa Grove of Sequoias. We set up a sprinkler system around the Grizzly Giant (26th largest tree?). Fire tan through some of the grove so we are mopping up and putting out heavy logs around the bases of the trees on n the grove. We are also felling fire damaged trees because this is be of the main tourist attractions for Yosemite and civilians will be back in here soon enough.
Before we started suppressing fires these trees could take considerable fire runs. The fire regime was much more frequent and there wasn’t as much ground litter (fuel). Sequoias are Fire dependent and need fire for their cones to pop out the seeds and it helps thin competition for sunlight for the saplings. Over the past 140 years we have been putting out fire because of threat to homes and tourism. The Natives lived with fire and even set fires to clean the forest. It’s a shame that we can’t live with fire today.
My crew made the news on NBC, CBS, and CNN, among many newspapers via Reuters. They allowed the media to come into the grove where we were working. It was kind of annoying having a camera in your face while working.
