Another 273 question

Seems years ago we had a member that went by “The Rev”. Ran a wagon in stock eliminator with the 273. Held several class records. Seems he was consistent in the mid 13s. Another is Paul Wong, runs in Division 7. Runs 273s in a 65 Valient and a Belvedere.

you can actually make a 273 work. It’s a matter of blending all the right parts and modifying the heads to increase both flow and velocity. Remember, the stock 273 2 barrels ran from the factory a CR OF 8.8 to 1. Wouldn’t take much to get the motor to around a 9.5 to 1 with crunching some numbers and applying a little machine work.

As far as heads try and find some 920s. My experience the 920s have the best flow characteristics stock. A little bowl blending, add some stainless valves (1.88 cut down to 1.82 to avoid shrouding) will add both flow and port velocity appropriate for that small motor. I agree on the E4 grind. Oregon Cam has experience with the 273.

I should note that another info source would be Matt Steen. Runs a 273 in Super Stock. He owns Victory Engines. Not sure if he’s still a member here.
