To change the gas tank, I had to drop the rear end on the 54 Chevy. Removed the shackles, changed the gas tank, and the rear spring eyes were way too far to reconnect. The service manual method did not work.
Got a bright idea - put a rock bar under each rear wheel and connected the bar to the end of the leaf spring above it with a ratchet stap. Put the weight of the car on the bar and cranked down on the strap to help “flatten” the spring to get the shackle parts to line up.
Not perfect, took some tweaking, but it worked!
